I am looking at buying a C27 sloop with wheel steering and a Universal M-18. She was used in fresh water up until 1991 and stored for three years. It is currently being used on saltwater and has seen limited use (mostly summer usage)from 1994 to the prsent. She appears to be in very good condition, however, I would not purchase it without a survey. I am interest in feedback on the types of problems current owners have experienced with the 1986 C27. Engine problems(M18), chain plate problems, water leaking in, problems with the head, keel problems (4'keel), underway handling, pointing, rudder and steering play etc. Any help anyone can provide is greatly appreciated Thanks.

I have an 84

Bob-- I have an 84 Catalina 27 (standard rig) with the Universal M-18 diesel. It's been a great boat. The survey on mine revealed that it was in great shape, with no serious problems, and only a couple of minor issues to address. A good surveyor will help explain the boat's construction and systems, too. The M-18 diesel has been a superb little engine--plenty of power for the 27. It'll push the boat along at hull speed--6.25kts--all day long (I've done it--18 hours straight). It cruises effortlessly in the 5.25-5.5 knot range. Fuel economy depends on speed, of course, but I usually burn about .25 gal per hour at 5.25-5.5kts. Change the oil, provide super clean fuel, and it should serve you well. Spending the money to have the engine inspected pre-purchase is wise though--replacing one of these engines costs many thousands, and rebuilds are not cheap either. Good luck with your purchase. 86 C-27

I have a 86 model #6293. I agree with Randy on engine performance with a 2 blade prop. Catalina did a lot of improving by the time they built the 84 model. Upgraded chain plates, spreader sockets, moved the forward hatch down to the slope on the cabin, double tube bow and stern rail, improved cockpit drains, stainless keel bolts, and bigger electrical panel. I did have a problem with water in the bilge under sail. I found cracks in the cockpit drain lines and a leaky stuffing box on the steering tube. Both itiems were simple fixes. It's a great boat!

Thanks for the info.

Randy and Don, Thanks for your feedback regarding my inquiry. I will certainly keep them in mind when I look at the boat this weekend. Happy Sailing Bob

86 C 27

We've had our boat almost 2 years and have enjoyed many hours of sailing fun. Check the exhaust and scupper drain hoses carefully. As with any boat with a few years on it, these hoses will eventually crack and can leak, which can mess up your sailing day. You almost have to hang upside down like a bat to inspect them, but aren't that hard to replace. Blistering is more likely in warm fresh water (like where I'm at). If you have blisters, you can negotiate the sell price down. Some sailors say live with them, others recommend repairing them. This website offers a wealth of info on the C 27. Good luck
