hello all

I have a chance to get a fantastic deal on another boat... at present I sail a '67 Kittiwake 23... I do not plan to stop sailing it, or plan to sell her, but this deal on this other boat is really good... I am looking at a '77 Glandar Tavana 33... I do not know much about these boats, and would appreciate anything anyone else knows about them ?.... the owner recently died and his spouse doesn't sail, so the family is looking to get rid of it fast, so they do not have to pay the bill on the marina anymore... what is a boat like this worth ?... is it worth my time to invest in it ?...

I did some research and they only made 134 of these boats, and only 26 were yawls like this one... there is not much out on the web about these boats, that I could find... any help with this would be greatly appreciated...

thank you

sincerely
Jess

no matter how affordable it seems, it is NOT a good deal unless you have lots of spare dollars to put into it..

to do any fixing up on it, improvements and upgrades an like you are trying to do to the kittiwake, you need to expect the basic budget to be about 4 times as much.... on top of the moorage fees... so with both boats needing TLC, the dollars become thin...

believe me, I know these things....:D

hello recess

this question is off the subject a little.... would you take your Pearson 323 and sail it from Florida to the Caribean area ?.. I am looking at this Tavana 33 for sailing around the keys and down to the Caribean for vacations and getaways... do you think this boat is too small for this kind of adventure ?.. I have a friend who thinks I am crazy if I was to do this... but then he has money and owns a boat that is 58ft long too... I know this Tavana has sailed to the Caribean before with the previous owner...

what do you think about an adventure to the Caribean in a 32 to 36 ft sailboat ???

sincerely

Jess, absolutely "doable" although I must admit I haven't seen the video or researched the boat. As you already know, once the Gulf Stream is dealt with, where you go is up to you.

I'll do some looking, but many, many folks have done the Bahamas in MUCH smaller boats, like "Boat Babe on Strike" in their IIRC Hunter 25.

Even just a few years ago 33 feet was BIG!

PS - The Caribbean is a BIG place. Where ya planning to go?

As long as the boat is well built, without doubt. It sounds like the Tavana was built for just this. Crossing to bimini is 50+ miles but with current and angle you could say 60 ish. You leave in the early morning before daybreak and you will still see the lights of Miami as you start to see the lights of Bimini. You just have to make sure the winds are favorable for the Gulf Stream. A good friend that we still cruise with crossed in a MacGregor 26X and it got a bit rough on their crossing.

We have to cross the Gulf from Carrabelle to Tarpon Springs first and that is a longer exposed time than crossing to Bimini. I would not hesitate as long as my boat was well cared for.

hello all

now I am very confused... I came across a great deal today... and I am torn between the Tavana I have been looking at, and a 41 ft Soverel... the 41ft Soverel is in good shape and ready to sail... she has 8 sets of sails, harken furler, and a perkins 30 hp diesel, alcohol gimbaled stove, fridge, head with shower, bottom cleaned in '13, new bottom paint in '12, new halyards in '12, new standing rigging in '10... she needs a little TLC to make her in show perfect image again, but she looks great right now.... the Soverel has lots of wood inside and out... both boats are full keel boats... I have this thing for full keel boats I could live on board right now...

I am torn between the 2 boats... the 33 Tavana I can get really cheap but needs some work, and the 41 Soverel is ready now and needs very little work, but will be a deal of downpayment and several payments over some months.... I like both boats for ther unique features and looks, but I can only afford 1 boat.... as I said, I am confused and torn between the 2 boats... not sure which I should get.... I am seeking advice on this...

sincerely

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Just remember....the bigger the boat the more it will cost you in maintenance. By more I mean A LOT more!

Wood is also a lot of work.

You want advice? Keep your wallet in your pocket till well after you are SURE of what you want.

Nobody needs a sailboat and certainly nobody needs two.
