I am looking at a 1978 hunter 27. One of the things about this boat is that the inboard engine has been removed and now is powered by a 9.9hp outboard. Is there any plus or minus to this situation? What other items should i concern myself with. Thanks in advance.

I don't know a whole lot about 27's but fell comfortable with:
An outboard conversion reduces the value of the boat because it is not original and is not as reliable as a diesel. Unless the outboard is electric start and remote controlled, it is a pain to deal with on a transom such as the 27's. In rougher water, outboards will usually come out of the water and be slammed back into the water providing jerky forward thrust and stress on the lower unit. They are however lighter overall and less expensive to maintain. Also, the transom should have been beefed up since it was not designed to carry an outboard (were some 27's standard with outboard?)
Other than that; the usual rigging, deck, hardware, sails, bottom, hull, wiring and interior bulkhead considerations apply.

I'd keep looking... Even if the outboard is doing the job and the transom is sound you don't have the same ballast and therefore the same handling that she once had. There are a lot of boats out there.

I agree. I would keep lookinng. If the PO got that fed up with an engnie, that if kept up would last forever no telling what else they got fed up with.

I could see a porta john in stead of a marine tolet. I could see relocating an electrical panel or removing a stove. I cant see taking out inboard and putting on an out board.

I have a 1980 Hunter 27 and love the boat but I doubt that it would sail as it should with the additional weight of an outboard hanging on the transom.

I would keep looking as there are many boats available. If fact, if you look in the Milwaukee area on Craigs, you will find a Hunter 27 at a very reasonable price.

There are a lot of guys with outboards and they love them. Sailing characteriistics nothwithstanding, I had one on a C22 and really disliked the way the prop came out of the water in a chop. Also it was mounted off center to clear the tiller so when motorsailing, on one tack it was well down, on the other it was hardly under. Love my inboard. Won't go back if I can help it.

I just purchased a 1990 27. It came from the factory with an outboard and remote controls in the cockpit. When it died the PO replaced it with a Yamaha 6HP and removed the remote controls. (He said people kept hitting the controls with their feet.

The boat moves fine and sails great.

However, I will say it's tricky standing on the transom to control the motor and tiller while docking...

The one nice thing when I had the outboard was backing. It was nice to be able to steer the stern where ever I wanted to go. Backing a single screw with the stbd boogie is a handful. The transom stand sounds interesting. Sounds like a good sea story in the making.
