I'm looking at a 1981 37 cutter. I did not see any deck softening or port leaks, my wife saw one. We did notice leak under traveler into companion way bulkhead, wood is soften at bottom. overall, it looks good- Wanted any ideas on price? - doesn't have any extras (autohelm, bimini needs replacing, no cockpit awning, does have dinghy davits but no dinghy) any other structure problems that seem to run in this line, I've heard of some aluminum tank leaks? want to have idea of what to expect for future costs. it was given a epoxy barrier coating two years ago. thanks

After the survey. . .

there are some things to check. I had two H37Cs surveyed. The first failed miserably, entire top deck was saturated. The second had a few high moisture areas, mainly around the chainplates and the forward traveler. But the survey also pointed out many minor things that needed fixing. This helped reduce the cost. Only my aluminum holding tank was replaced before I bought the boat, a 1979. My two water tanks and diesel tank are still functioning. But others have had their water tanks leak. For an idea of prices try YachtWorld, see Related Link.

this maybe obvious. but

Typically, on these 20 year old 37s, the original holding tank (under the shower seat) will have been replaced, and you might see some pitting in the water or fuel tanks(can be fixed or replaced). The surveyor should check for leaks, and these are all fixable items but might help negotiate a slightly better price. My original portlights are begiining to go, but in some cases a new gasket will fix the problem. Look for signs of leaks in the wood beneath the portlights. The asking prices for 37 cutters of this vintage are all over the map, from about $30,000 to $70,000 last time I looked, based on condition and add-on equipment. A great boat if it has been cared for. Good luck. Sanders

price

This vintage hunter is going for 40,000 to 50,000 dollars in my area (NC). We have a 1982 hunter c and we love the boat.

Love Mine

I have owned my 1981 H37C for almost 2 years - could not be happier. Prices vary widely depending on location and condition. I bought mine for $33K. It didn't have any extras and needed TLC and updating, but the survey passed with no major issues. Since purchasing, I have thoroughly cleaned the boat, refinished all the interior and exterior wood, replaced interior cushions, installed refrigerator, stove, and autopilot, rebedded traveler and topside handrails to stop leaks, and replaced the exhaust mixing elbow. All in all, not many surprises - most was just time consuming "tinkering" on the boat. If you haven't already, read the owner reviews on this site. They will give you a good idea of the problem areas on the H37C - not many significant ones for a boat of the era.

There Are Very Few Boats

That garner as much loyalty from their owners as the 37c; especially if you factor in the amazingly low price they go for!!! Check out the many posts on this site. We purchased our 1981 37c in 1988; we moved aboard that year.....we were sitting in the den of our house.....my wife said, "Dave, what's the cat playing with?" I checked and sheepishly said, "Sorry Honey, it's a cockroach!"...."I'm outa here", she says, "I don't live with cockroaches! When this place is fumigated, I'll be back. Meanwhile, we're sleeping on the boat." We'd only had the "new" boat 3 months, but we took our sleeping bags and stuff down to the marina. Sixteen years later, we're still living on our 37c, and I really thank that 'roach! After 13 years at the marina, we cut the lines and left. We're now living in Avalon, on Catalina Island; we've been here almost 3 years, and we couldn't be happier!!!! The boat is a great boat! It's a great home!!! We live on the hook or a mooring, so the boat really must perform! Each and every day, we use the boat, her systems, her features, we use it all on a daily basis; not just on the weekends during a short sailing season.....24/7/365!! Things like leaky ports (replaced), bad holding tank (still holding under DAILY use!), mushy decks (one place near the mast that's been unchanged for 16 years), you name it, the boat was built well using good materials, designed by a GIFTED designer, and it can be had at a great price!! What else do you need? Grab it!
