Looking at 272LE

Greetings,

I'm looking to move up to a 272 from my Sirius 21 and have a few questions on the 272's.

What is the standing headroom in the 272?
How bad/or not, is the sideslip with the winged keel?
How is the 272 for towing, I have Z71 Silverado 5.3 4x4?

Looking for opinions on the 272 tiller vs. the 272LE wheel....

Thanks for any help or guidance in advance..

Hello Mike. You should be able to get some information from the iheartodays.com site. It has the boat info, sells brochures, etc. Somewhere there is a site where owners post reviews of their boats, still looking for that link.

Just noticed an '88 272 w/9.9 outboard & trailer (trailer needs 'reconditioning') at my marina today. Only asking $6k for all. I had heard he lost his mast about 3 yrs ago, but all exterior looks to be in good shape. Roller furling jib. I have only seen the owner there once in 3 yrs (about the time he was replacing his mast). If anyone is interested, I can get his name/phone # tomorrow...

I have an '87 272. The cabin height is over 6'. I am only 5'8", and I would guess it to be about 6'2"... I like the tiller. The boat is responsive. It turns well. You can balance the sails, lock the tiller, and it will stay on a course. I have a 9.9 outboard, and it has plenty of power in reserve to move the boat. It is a simple boat with lots of room. It has way more stability and power on the water than my C22. However, it does like to heel at 10 knots or more. However, that can be tuned out of it with the sails. The cockpit is roomy. There is good storage. My biggest complaint is that the traveller car is manual. There are no lines to haul the traveller car either to windward or leeward. The traveller track is curved, and modifying it to add blocks and lines has proven only semi-satisfactory. I will probably change the track to a flat track this Winter.

I pull my 272 with a Ram 1500 4x4. I do not pull it from the water. I pay to have it lifted and to have the mast stepped.

The mast base has a pretty-much useless little pin to fit in a slot on the step plate. I imagine most are broken by the time the boats are 20 yrs old. It is there to stop the mast from sliding forward while stepping it from the stern. I will remove mine, since it actually hinders stepping the mast with a crane.

The boat cruises along at 7kts nicely. It is an easy boat to handle. I am happy moving up to it from the C22.

Greetings,

Thanks for the input. I've been reading about the curved traveler, no one seems to like it.

At 10-15 knots, how much heel does the boat show, 20 degrees or dipping the toe rail!!

On note, on the LE model does the wheel come off to get it out of the way when moored?

Thanks...

More like 18-20 degrees! The Admiral gets the "let's reef" going beyond that!

A neighbor of mine changed to a flat traveler at the forward end of the cockpit (like the 25 and 26) He felt it worked out better. That would also make adding line controls easier I suspect. Moving the traveler aft also reduces the load/strain on the traveler, making mainsheet trimming easier.
As far as trallering, I suspect the 272 is more "trailer -transportable" than trailerable, remember the beam is 9'0" possibly requiring a wide-load permit (Federal Highway limit is 8'6" to avoid wide load ,local roads may be 8'0" in many stateas.) Weight is also over 5000# for just the boat, add trailer and gear and you need a strong truck to pull. Inboard option (or 272LE will add about 350-400# more)

O'DAY listed cabin headroom as follows: 6'2" under companionway hatch, 6' at forward end of companionway, 5'10" at main bulkhead.

Finally, yes, the wheel on the 272LE can be removed from the pedestal while moored/docked, you may need a wrench for the nut, but EDSON does sell a replacement for the nut that is made to remove by hand, and a bracket to mount to the sternrail to hold the wheel (not sure if that bracket fits the 272LE, but should).

Article below was scanned from an old copy of the CAL-O'DAY Owners Newsletter from around 1992. (Captains Log Dec/Jan 1992) When he mentions "added bridgedeck..." I think he meant bridge deck traveller, since his mainsheet clearly lead to the bridge deck.

We bought our 272 LE new in late 86 and the boat was delivered in a snowstorm in early 1987...We have sailed the heck our boat and we have tried to take excellent care of her. She is a very fine boat that has had very few problems.. I do note the need to re-do the traveler to provide an adjustable situation...we kept the curved track and purchased blocks and tackle to make it very nice....I lube the track once or twice a year, but it is easily adjustable....Our boat has a wheel which we enjoy...the wheel was designed by Edson Corp. especially for the 272 LE. It is extremely senisitive and I can generally steer it with one finger..(if I wanted)...a 1/4 inch turn of the wheel will make the boat head up or fall off....it is esp. nice in higher winds... We had a Doyle stack pak main sail system installed and also had them cut the new main so there was a bit more roach in the main, although nothing like the Hunters. The head room is more than adequate for me, although a 6'3" person might need to 'duck'. Our boat is a beautiful boat still to this day and I'm certain I will not buy another boat as I'm getting older and this is all we need....we sail it very often....the boat will heel over in a gust but we've not had the toe rail under...in breezy conditions she will heel over and it will just lock in and sail for miles without messing with anything.....we pay attention to our traveler and are not afraid to reef, but have not this year. Our friends are constantly amazed at how this O'Day 272 sails with a 2 ft, 11 inch draft. Part of this may be due to the rudder actually extending below the keel, esp with 4 or 5 people aboard....She has protected us in some really rough weather both at our slip and on the water....she and our club have made our lives very exciting. Good Luck on your decision making. Pat

Happy with My 272LE as well! No complaints. Shallow draft great for the bays in my area, no noticeable problems when I'm in deep water going around Long Island (NY). I didn't intend to buy the LE, but one was available when I was ready, good price, good shape, so I got it. I don't trailer either, it gets lifted out every winter and winters on the hard in my winter marina.

I trailer my 272 back to my garage, about 50 miles from the marina. I certainly would not consider the 272 a trailer sailer! I am able to pull it adequately with my 2012 Ram 1500. I do not pull the boat from the water. I have it lifted onto the trailer. I have pulled my 26 Oday from the water, and I was able to pull it easily up a pretty steep ramp.

I think you will be happy with either the 272 or LE model. I enjoy the way my 272 handles.

Thanks,
Andrew
