I am planning on inspecting "Silent Magic" a 1981 Hunter 30 shortly after New Years. I would appreciate any information available as to what potential problems may be inherent to this model. If I find the boat acceptable I will be employing a marine surveyor but would like any beforehand information if possible. Thank you in advance for any information you may share.

Hunter 30 thoughts

I bought a 1982 Hunter 30 in August and have been refurbishing her. A few of the things that I have found on mine (which, prior to my purchase had taken on fresh water to 4 inches in the cabin) This was caused by the cockpit drains. Both hoses had cracked. There are also leaks in the fiberglass around where the hoses connect. It looks to me like it was caused by poor original construction, and has probably leaked for her whole life. These have been repaired. The boat is dry, now. The biggest concern is a rusted mast support in the bilge. I will be starting on that repair in a few weeks. Another problem was broken port latches. I came up with a solution by cutting off the broken base and fabricating a new one out of brass. All of the port and hatch gaskets needed to be replaced. Balmar sells these for the Gray ports. All of the ports will need to be re-caulked. I have been told to trash the Combi electronics system. The Skeg has a separation from the hull of about one quarter of an inch. Not sure if this is normal. Does anyone have insight into this? Is it normal? My surveyor said to tighten the bolts. The mast has galvanic corrosion where fittings are attached. The surveyor thinks it is minor, but we will check when I remove the mast. I will be replacing most of the hoses and tubing. Otherwise, the boat seems solid. The hull has no blisters, even though it sat at the dock for about five years while the previous owner neglected her. The interior is in great shape, excepting a vague water line- no rot. One more thing. Be careful when working inside the storage areas, behind the wood trim. There are screw points that protrude inside. I have a cut on my hand that is still healing. I will be grinding these. Good luck! I am happy with my boat, so far. I have not sailed her, yet. I hope my wife and I enjoy how she sails, after all of the work.

Archives and Reviews

There are some great and lengthy discussions of maintenance issues with the Cheribini h30 you are considering. Most have to do with water penetration and deterioration of the deck, or the mast step. Do check the archives of the site, and the h30 owner reviews for lots of details. Merry Christmas, David Lady Lillie

I'm in the process at this time of fixing the mast sag problem. Having the Ibeam remade out of SS. My presure post is still good plan to reuse. The mast step is poorly designed I feel. I'm having the square cutout at the bottom of it filled in and welding in a 4" piece of pipe to run my wires through. I also cut the deck out around the raised area that the mast sets on and filled it in with fiberglass. Had minor damage to basla core. won't be a problem any longer. Was an easy job. I cut the Ibeam in half and knocked it out with a hammer. I'm at this time ready to spray the gel coat back on the deck area that I patched and put things back together. So far thinks its turning out nice.

1981 H30

We purchased our 1981 H30 in 2000 and we have been upgrading a few items at a time each season. We found some cracks in the glass area around the hull fitting where the cockpit drain hose fits. We used some 3M sealant and put in a beefier set of hoses. I would also get rid of all plastic thru hull fittings. We really have not had any problems apart from the need to reorganize much of the wiring that goes into athe panel box. I have 'Tense Moments' on the hard in South Haven if you want to take a look at her to compare. We think it is a good boat and can take Lake Micigan offshore weather with a lot of respect.
