I was power washing the deck of the C 27 yesterday, getting ready to take some friends out for sail. I found that the forestay turnbuckle had broken. I had been out two days before and all was well. It must have snapped after the boat was loaded on to the trailer.
The mast stayed up because the C27 has lowers fore and aft.
The only question is whether to replace the stay with one from Catalina Direct or make one up using Norse fittings. Timo42 used them to for his Mac 22 and endorses them. The stay from Catalina is $142 which is not bad for a single stay. I may need to make up all of the shrouds for the Lugar 30 and could replace all of the shrouds on the C27 this winter.
I haven't done the math yet but I would imagine that the savings could be substantial.
I also have to decide whether to have myself dragged up the mast or lower the mast to replace the shroud. I already have a nice bosun's chair. I've been up a couple of times before and it requires two people. If I lower the mast I can do it by myself. Punching out that clevis pin is difficult when the mast is down let alone doing it while hanging 30+ feet over the deck.
Either way it looks like my next couple of weeks are screwed.
