I'm wanting to replace an old & dead depth sounder with a new unit. Prefer something under $150.00 or so. Inland and coastal gulf of Mexico sailing. I have been reading about look-thru transducers designed to be glued to the hull (or mounted in a box containing a liquid) but have seen cautions to avoid doing it with a cored boat.
So.. my question: a 1981 Cheribuni Hunter 27'.. is this a cored boat?
Thanks!

solid fiberglass. Installed an in-hull transducer about 5 years ago in my 1984 h27. In reality, it has been working better than the thru hulll previously installed.

I would recommend that you place it in a bag with water and test it in different location before you permanently mount it. Avoid areas where there may be cavitation (directly aft of the keel)

Sam we mounted one on the stern of the boat using "plumbers putty". Been there for a couple of years without trouble. Use it as a backup for the forward sounder and when we are on anchor so I know how much depth we have under the rudder. Easy installation just clean the fiberglass well and stick on the putty then put the transducer in it. Even reads the water temp with no issues.
