Yes, I was at a wind load design seminar earlier this year, presented by an engineer from Delaware, who described a "derecho" that swept across the Chesapeake last summer. It seems this event swept across the country, originating somewhere just east of the Mississippi River.

I recall the postings of a few forum members who where on their boats last summer when this terrifying event went through long after dark, without much warning. It affected a large area of the Chesepeake, but I know it didn't affect us this far north in NJ.

A good image from the NWS of what may be coming. I'm glad I'm in Maine.

Hopefully (for me anyway) Lake Hopatcong looks to be on the edge of severe weather. We had enough downed trees last fall and I'm finally cleaned-up. The lake is already on "no-wake" restriction due to high water, so we don't need more rain (another 2 inches anticipated for Thursday) ... and much of the grass seed I spread a few weeks ago is migrating to the bottom of the hill, along with the soil I carefully spread and raked out earlier this spring!

Yikes, upon a secondary look, there is an orange dot over our head on the one map.

Actually, I didn't spread the soil all that carefully ... I put a rented Kubota excavator/loader on its side when I got a little too off-balance on a side hill (damn small front tires!). Luckily, no damage and we got the diesel engine running again after relieving the pressure from oil in the cylinder.

I've just about had it with yard improvements and storm damage repair!

New to the term, but painfully experienced in the damage straight line winds generated in a thunderstorm can cause to roof, trees and fences (to the tune of about $10k). We have a slate tile roof and one of these storms blew a dozen tiles from the roof on the back of the house, over the house and a couple hundred feet further across the street to the lot in front of the house...we've been in the house over thirty years, had at least three hurricanes make, either a direct hit or, come close enough for Cat 3 winds and have never had anywhere near the damage nor do more to the roof than dislodge a few tiles.

We leave our C-320 tied in anticipation of just such a strike.

Roger, you actually were very close to a derecho 2-weeks ago in Ma. This was brought to my attention by our local weatherman and I may have mispelled it to you on an earlier post.
That derecho that hammered us last yr was the most severe weather event that I have ever witnessed, over 80mph winds...my 50 yr old Oak trees were heavily damaged and we were without power for over a week...nasty!
The national and local forecasters completely missed forecasting it, only later to come up with a new term "derecho" after it already had gone through here.
We are very vunerable right now, tropical storm remnants dumped 4" rain last week on us followed by 5" more locally on Monday which produced widespread flooding here.
I had to put sand bags out to keep the flooding torrent out of my basement and I presently have 1" dia blisters on my hands from digging a 12'x2'x2' trench in my back yard for 2 days to divert next storm runoff away from my house.
Whats going on with our weather?

Oh and I almost forgot, The Nat. Weather Service has confirmed at least 3 Tornadoes touched down here in the Balto. area during that storm Monday...These severe weather events never used to happen around here

Meanwhile, in Maine, life goes on with several traditional vessels in port.

Amistad being hauled out today at Gowen Marine in Portland with a forlorn looking Spirit of Massachusetts laid up along side. According to someone I spoke to on the Harvey Gamage, Amistad is now working with Ocean Classroom. Westward is also in port but is stripped of sails and some spars.

Yup. Sitting here in Maryland around 2am waiting for the storms to come. Not looking forward to it.

Last year during the derecho, we were at a marina on the Rappahannock in Virginia when it hit. A nasty, wild, one hour storm. Rocking and rolling at the slip. Back home in Maryland, power was out for 4 days. I hope we escape that this time. Will know in 12 hours from now. Gotta get to bed first though.

It was moving at 50mph this morning as it went past Hagerstown. They promised us a second wave this afternoon, but I haven't seen anything of note on radar.....

I bet you'll see a wall of wind come out of a clear, dry sky like the one that caught me in Passamaquoddy Bay and last year in the Alligator River when it seemed like the frontal disturbance had passed.

Let me know if I'm right.

Nothing of note, just a bit of breeze as the pm line slid through.

Is a storm or group of storms producing 50 knot straight line winds. The term was first used in 1877 but was apparently revived recently by some weather Guru.
