I am very interested in the late 70's early 80's H27. Wondering what major items to be aware of. ie I saw a post about the compression post problem.

Look for slushy deck under the mast step. The deck is cored with balsa and the wires for the mast lights come up through the cabin through the deck next to the mast...They have PERKO type plug fittings on the deck. Female pluccs into male fitting that are pelow the deck. A stupid design which asllows for water intrusion into the mast step.
Have fun... just sold my 1978 H-27 after 15 years of fuynd. Basically bullet proof (except for the mast step) and great for a DYIer. Small boat buck.

I have an '84 27 that I bought 5 years ago. I'm writing to you on the 9th day of a 12 day trip in the central North Carolina area. I'm in Oriental tonight. First let me say I love my 27. I'm in a marina with about 10 other boats, all over 35 feet and my 27 looks so small, but today on the Pamlico Sound, sailing at 6.5 mph in a 12 mph wind, we were all equal.
My 27 had a Westerbeke 10 hp when I bought. Boat had not been used for several years and water had gotten into fuel. Long story short, I replaced engine 3 years ago with a new Yanmar 15hp - best decision ever! Over the 5 years of ownership, there have been a number of small issues to deal with, but these all delt with wear and tear. I have only a few small blisters, no mast plate problems, minor leaks around toe rail, but I fix every few years. One issue I dislike is bildge is very shallow and below floor interconnections for moving liquid to bildge are inadequate. I have yet to find bildge pump to kick on early enough or shut off late enough - so bildge is usuall loaded and if sailing, water moves to under salon seats and gets anything storred wet. A pain, but not a killer.
I've put nearly 500 miles on this trip staying in anchorages 9 of 12 nights - go for it!! Tony

Look out for... well I bought a 79 h27 last month not knowing much about them and not for much money (you get what you pay for very true here) but did ok . Deck (cabin top) recored but not around mast step. Later descovered deck sandwich between compression post and mast has sag resulting in headliner and bulkhead underneath distorted about 3/4 inch. Most likely support under post inway of keel wasted. But repair spelled out by owners group so no worries mate. Bilge is issue but I believe solution possible (I'm on the case). My boat has tiller but would have liked wheel. Lots of weather helm also under fengine power which leads to engine. Mine has 8HP Renault deisel. I had to replace water pump impeller ( shipped from the UK) and we are still getting aquanted. Got the kinks worked out and throttled her up this week and I believe I reached hull speed.(I did mount 6HP long shaft as back up) on stern. Hull and deck structure very solid on my boat. Other than mast step issue ( which I think not critical and does not feel "soft") boat feels rock solid and likes wind. My wife loves boat (moved up from rhodes22) because it is not tender..feels like bigger boat.....since I have little invested (under3K) with good running engine, good sails fresh epoxy paint, good rigging ....I'm very happy with purchase....cheers frank
Amcmahon, Two things to solve your bilge problem: 1) apply a sealant to where the bilge discharge hose goes through the side of the bilge into the setee and 2) Get a Rule pump model 491928. It is automatic and self priming; a computer chip turns the pump on every 2.5 minutes to test for water. If it finds water resistance in the impeller it will continue to run untill it expells the water out if not it will shut down in 2 seconds. Even though it searches for water 24/7 the power usage is minimal as it only runs 48 seconds in one hour unless it finds enough water to expel. There will be a little backflow of water from the line but that amount will not cause the pump to recycle nor will it spill over when the boat heels. The only drawback is that the price is $50 but no float switch is needed. It is the same size as the standart Rule 500GPH and it fits nicely in the shallow bilge. It definitely turns on early and will run until the suction is broken. The end result is that at all times you will have minimum amount of water in the bilge and every 30 minutes or so you may see a small spurt of water coming out.
As mentioned mast step is an issue as well as parts availability for the Renault (if it has that engine). The bilge is shallow but no real reason to have much water in there anyway. A turkey baster gets out in about two minutes what a pump cant. Yeah, it likes to round up but you can consider that a "feature", not a "bug". Otherwise any other issues would be about the same as any other boat that is +/- 30 years old.
