As a prospective Catalina owner I have a question for Catalina owners. What is the longest voyage you've taken on your Catalina 27? Has anyone taken any long offshore voyages on Cats this size? Also, what items on your boat would you not sail without or that make your sailing easier/pleasureable? Thanks for your help folks!

Blue Water Cruise

Hi Cliff, We don't have a Catalina 27, but we traveled from the Delaware Bay to NY Harbor and return this Summer (2002) with 3 youth and 2 adults in the Sea Scouts 1983 25'Catalina with a 2002 9.9 Merc Long Shaft. She handled the seas well and we replaced the OB engine bracked with a power lift one when we returned because the origional was bent. We can now adjust the engine height while under power. We were able to do 5K while underway most of the trip. July 27th., we tied up alongside the INTREPID to celebrate the 90th. year of Sea Scouts. The Catalina is a solid salt water vessel and brought us home from our 11 day adventure. I was on our 1970 28' Irwin with 4 youth and the Catalina was able to keep up. We were told that she wouldn't make the trip, but they were wrong.

Catalina Boats the 27 and 22

Cliff, "Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere" John Vigor 1999, Paradise Cay Publications 1-800-736-4509. Boat #8 Chapter 8 Catalina 27, Patrick Childress sailed one around the world in the 1980's, Boats name was "JUGGERNAUT" Just keep the important part in mind! Going to sea in any boat can be harmfull to your health, as John Vigor says, The Catalina 27 when sailed useing commen sence and skill should take a person a long ways. I am now sailing my Catalina 1979 22 Fin keel #9131 I find the boat to be real classic plastic , very strong plastic as new ,below as shiny and new as day it was made!!!!, no cracks, very!!!!! dry, good srorage, very easy to sail, very good electrical system !!!!! The only plans now to changes I make in spring haul 2003, is to beef up rigging as it needs changed anyway, My next boat if and when I get tired of my 22 footer, will be a Catalina older 27, thay are a great boat, and the best part well loved by former owners and can be had at good prices. I hope this has been of some help, Jack Sailing "TooTacJac" San Diego CA

Longest C27 Trip

Patric Childress probably goes on the record as having the longest blue water sail on a C27. His boat Juggernaught was a shoal draft, traditional interior, outboard version. Patrick sailed his C27 over a 3 year period SOLO around the world. Patrick made a number of changes to Juggernaught for his cruise. Hope that helps, Larry Taborek C27 Dixie Chicken
