I have a Trinka fiberglass dinghy and need an outboard. There is a nice 4 hp johnson which is very light but a long shaft. Anyone used a long shaft outboard on a dinghy and have any info that would tell me if I could run into any problems. It would serve as a backup engine on my Hunter 25 which has a 9.9 if it could work.

I used a 6 HP suzuki, long shaft on my 12' sailboat and my 12' Porta Bote (folding boat) with great success. I just needed to watch out for shallow areas. The 6 HP would easily plane either boat with 2 adults aboard.

Your asking for problems

it is going to hit the ground too much. Get a nice Honda 4 stroke and pay out the big bucks.

It all depends on where YOU plan to use it

so instead of making sweeping generalities, most people prefer short shafts because with dinghies, they tend to go TO shore, where it's shallow. Let's keep it simple: Even with short shafts, ya gotta pull 'em up before ya hit the sand. So, it's your choice, just pull it up sooner. Once the water gets to be over 3 feet deep, it doesn't matter.
