Long or extra long shaft O'day 23/Trailer

need to know shaft lenght of outboard going on O'day 23 that has a pivoting bracket. It looks like a long will do while in the down position but need the right answer. Any thoughts on h.p. Its going to be a four stroke so its going to have a few extra lbs. Thanks. In the hunt for a used trailer for same. No time to build at present and 4000 for a store bought is out. Thanks

Get The Shaft!

The long shaft should work. As long as the prop is well into the water. Be very careful as to the weight. Unless your going to do ALOT of motoring; a 6-8 HP two cycle may be better.

Long Shaft, but Check Bracket Capacity

I used a long shaft on my 23 and it works fine. Key dimension is to check the length from your bracket in the down position to the waterline; the outboard anticavitation plate needs to be fully underwater. Also check your bracket if you are thinking of a 4-stroke. The brackets are made for weight ranges, and some manufacturers specify only suitable for 2-stroke. I found that I had to stay with 2-stroke. I moved up from my dying 8 to a new 9.9 to help fight ebb tides on my return to port through a channel.
