We are sailing from the Chesapeake to Block Island next week and want to see a bit of Long Island Sound on our trip back. We are thinking of stopping at Mystic, Port Jefferson, Cold Spring Harbor and City Island as a last stop before heading down the East River. Any suggestions on favorite anchorages or can’t be missed stops will be greatly appreciated.

Considor Greenport

You may want to considor Greenort from BI. Its about an 8 hour sail and will put you about 2 hours on the wrong side of the LI sound but well worth the trip. No moorings or anchorages but the town just installed a 60-slip public marina. Very nice facilities and several great restaurants and shops in walking distance. ROb

Oyster Bay adjoins Cold Spring Harbor and has much more to offer. Moorings are available or you can anchor out. Launch available to Oyster Bay Marine Center, free pump-out boat, walk into town or town beach.

A couple of neat places

A couple of neat Conn. places in addition to Mystic: Westbrook/Duck Island Roads: you can anchor in the roads of Duck Island behind two large breakwaters and dinghy in, or get a transient slip at Pilot's Point Marina, a huge full service facility. Nice expensive restaurant on site, with a few less expensive fun places across the street. Stony Creek/Thimble Islands: Stony Creek is a real New Englandy looking village with some nice stores and casual restaurants. The Thimbles are right off shore and is like a little slice of Maine. Some uninhabited, some with amazing mansions. Captain Kidd supposedly buried his treasure on one of them. Good luck looking.

City island

A good place to spend the night before you head for the east river is Stuyvesant Yacht Club. It is on the west side of City Island about half way up. You can see the Throgs Neck Bridge from there. Cost is nominal($25 a night), take the launch in and take your choice of numerous restaurants. Remember to check the tide in the east river and Hell Gate. You do not want to motor against the current!! Good luck.

Norwalk and its Islands are nice

Its probably a 3 hour sail from Port Jeff. You could anchor amongst the islands and have lunch and explore. Have good charts and keep an eye on where you are going - local knowledge helps in this place as I have seen boats go in places I am not sure the charts would encorage me to go . If you like a little bit of partying and nice restaurants the town dock is right over the bridge from Washington Ave. later in the week & weekends the most is going on (Martini Bars, Bands, nightlife, all sorts of restaurants -- cool shops to browse through). Also if you have kids there is a good Aquarium right down the street -- all worth while. But I would stay in the town dock as its not easy to find anchoring in the small mooring field they have next to the town. Its probably ~ $0.50 a foot to tie up for part of the day and maybe $1 (or a ($1.50???) to stay over night, -- sorry no electricity, though they do have a pumpout and running water, but the town dockmaster is very nice and accommodating. Note: Weekends during the day are very busy and tougher to find/get a spot until maybe later in the evening, but its doable. Annapolis is very nice and I think Mystic, Newport and Norwalk are probably the only places that hold any resemblance to Annapolis though (as you know) there are very many nices to stop all over the LI Sound
