I just purachased a 24' sailboat built by O'Day/Dolphin series, in 1961. I have discovered that there were only 36 boats of this series built between 1961 and 1967. I am looking for information about this boat model, can anyone help me? My Email pastorlouis@celebratechrist.com

A Little Known Classic

Designed in 1959 by Sparkman and Stephen, the 24' Dolphin was designed to meet the Midget Ocean Racing Rules (MORC). Built originally by Marscot Plastics, a division of O'Day boats, the boat was distributed by the U.S.Yachts company. There were actually 270 produced by 4 companies. Marscot Plastics, then FL. Tripp Co., then Yankee Yachts and finally Pacific Dolphin. You have a very rare early model, probably built by Marscot Plastics. What shape is it in? They were built very rugged, solid fiberglass. Thanks for your info. Don........

When the weather clears and I can get a good picture, I'll Post it in this forum. I'm still trying to find more info on the internet but I don't really know where to start. Louie

Rod Johnson,

Try a web search

I found a lot of info on the Dolphin 24 on a Sparkman & Stephens boat web-site, I am including a link to a Dolphin 24 web-site, not sure if it is still active, but try it. It was mentioned that Marscot was a division of O'Day, sort-of....actually, Marscot built boats for O'Day before George O'Day formed his own building company. When Marscot decided to get out of the sailboat building business, George O'Day bought the sailboat part of the company and formed the O'Day Boat Co. Most of the Marscot sailboat models were built for O'Day anyway so little changed.

Rod Johnson,

Link is dead

I tried to access the Dolphin 24 web-link that I listed, but it is out of service. I did a search on YAHOO and found one about a later "Pacific Dolphin", the owner is trying to re-activate the other site I think. I have listed the new link below.

Minor Problem in URL

Great sleuthing there Rod, just a slight misspell in that URL. I think this should work. I do like the looks of the Dolphin 24. Don

search is paying off!

According to a placard I found in my Dolphin 24, it was built by Lunn Laminates of Wyandauch, NY in 1961 and marketed by US Yachts Inc of East Norwalk, CT. Both of these companies no longer exist. Lunn Laminates eventually became a part of Allied Boat Company. The interior of my boat dosen't resemble that of the ODay Dolphins and has an inboard engine, a palmer single cylinder 4 stroke which was installed when the boat was built. I have contacted Sparkman & Stephens who designed the boat and found that they have archived plans of the orginal design of my dolphin 24. I'm looking forward to recieving the information and should have her in the water by mid May.

Another Lunn Laminates Dolphin

Hi Louie- I am also an owner of one of these. Mine was built in January 1962 by Lunn Laminates. I have been in touch with the original owner who was the Chief Engineer on the project. Mine also has a Palmer Huskie one-lunger. I have never tried to find out if it works since, even if it does, the first time it breaks I'll be on the hard for a year looking for parts. There were quite a few of the older (inboard) Dolphins around Long Island Sound but you don't often see them now. I have run into two abandoned boats in yards and seen two other active ones. My interior is just like an O'Day. I think more changes took place when Yankee bought the molds than before. If I can be of any help, please feel free to email me.
