Should the turnbuckles on a Hunter 27 have nuts that can be tightened to keep them from loosening? My previous 21' boat had them but my new-to-me boat does not. The Marina that stepped the mast didn't say anything about it. Thanks. Paul

Do you have...

...roller furling? If so (or you convert in the future) I think most recommend having open turnbuckles, or at least a configuration that allows a pin or safety wire to keep the headstay from spinning. Bolts can come loose over time when a furling is over the headstay. If there's no pin or locking nut, it may be a good idea to put one on. Just my thoughts, but safer is always better. Good sailing!

ABSOLUTELY YES!!!!

Last summer I had a stay come lose on me in very rough weather while sailing between Block Island and Cutty Hunk. I was very unnerving to see the stay swinging wildly in 7 foot seas. The reason, because I was still tuning the rigg and left the locking nuts lose. By all means put locking nuts on and keep them tightened at all times!

YES, a turnbuckle must have Jam Nuts (locking nuts). See also: Safety Wire on Turnbuckles: http://www.tech.purdue.edu/at/courses/at308/Technical_Links/Ac43-13-1B/CH7_10.pdf
