My Hunter 28 didn't have a brake on the Edson wheel when I bought it. First thing I had the dealer add. Worth every penny.

wheel brake

Most of the older Edson pedestals have a small plug on the port side just under the shaft. If yours does, you should be able to get the wheel brake assembly from Edson and retrofit your boat. It's not a hard job. Only downside is that Edson parts are a little dear $$$.

I don't know what your marina quoted you but the Edson wheel brake system cost me $209.00 at mine - Worth every penny.

Locking the helm

I assume you are not talking about "while at anchor" as that is a no brainer; use a line.
This is an excellent time to broach the subject of getting an auto pilot for the boat with the Admiral don't you think?

I'm talking about single handing under sail. The ability to lock the wheel is huge. As for the auto pilot, if he thought the brake was spendy that should really make him blink.
