I know this is a stupid question, but does anyone know the location of the starting battery on a 361. Have a big 4D in front of the engine for the house, but can't find the starting battery anywhere....
I've always been curious as to why beneteau puts the house battery in front of the engine, and the starting battery under the aft bunk. For some reason it seems like reverse logic.
Is it because of the heat generated in the engine compartment, and the thought that it might deteriorate the starting power? Or is it because a smaller starting battery will fit under the bunk?
I wondered the same thing but I like having it away from the engine more than infront of it, always scared of putting a tool down and somehow shorting it out.
on that topic, has anyone replaced the aft water tank with batteries ? I wouldnt mind getting another set of batteries and use that location as its perfect. I was thinking either smaller tank or none since 100 gallons is far more than we use in a weekend.... any thoughts ?
Doug my guess would be they placed them there due to their size and weight. I replaced my 4D with two 6V golf cart batteries last year. Lifting the 4D out was not exactly easy on the back. Although my dealer places an optional 4D next to the start battery I can't imagine getting it in or out of there.

I also have a 361 and there are 3 batteries on mine, 2 4D and a start battery. 1 4D at the front of the engine like most others and another 4D under the aft berth all the way to port in a space not much wider than the battery. The start battery is in a small battery box under the aft berth to port in the area of the prop shaft. The boat seems balanced okay.
Gaute, I'd look to see if I could add batteries like Wickford's boat has. Removing the water tank may lower the value of your boat should prospective buyers care more about water capacity than battery power. I think you can have your cake and eat it too.

I think I'd run into balance inssue.. I already do as my port side has settee has everything from kid toys to generator and outboard. She seems to balance ok with a full aft tank but its still lots of weight in the back...
Perhaps putting a expandable tank for the little area infront of the V berth and link it to the main tank ? The battery on starboard and close to the other battery seems ideal and more weight up front wouldnt hurt in the summer time which is when we have it fully loaded with all "necessities".
