I have a 1084 H34 and am exploring a safe and functional location to mount a propane locker. Due to limited space in the cockpit I'm considering placing it in the starboard lazerette on a shelf just below the windless switch. This location is convenient to the stove however is not above deck and would need adequate venting. One option for venting the locker (in order to avoid drilling a new throughhaul) is to tie the vent into the stbd cockpit drain. Please let me know your thoughts re. this hair brained plan.
One caveat about the gas-tight tank locker. Doing this right will take some glass work on your part or spending some major BUC's for a certified commercial box.
And then there's the vent -- the ABYC guide for this part is for a
safe Minimum installation. Any vent that will be plugged at any time your boat is in a normal sailing or motoring mode is not going to pass.
This is a situation where "almost good enough a lot of the time" will fail the install.
Being uninsurable as well as (marginally) unsafe is ill advised.
Best to try to mount that tank box as high up as practical so that the vent hose can be led straight (without any dips that might hold water) out the transom. That way heeling will not affect the functionality.(and Safety)
I like propane and have done a whole installation before, on our last boat, but it MUST be installed and maintained to a high standard.
