I have been looking to put more chain on my main anchor and to make a rig for my storm anchor. That being said I need to purchase a bunch of chain. All I have around me is boaters world and West Marine. So I have been putting this off due to their prices. I will be going up to NJ in the next couple of weeks (newark) and was thinking that Defender in CT can't be that much further. On the other hand it is one heck of a ride so can anyone suggest somewhere closer that would have a reasonable price on chain? Also, please confirm my thinking of what to get for my 27' Hunter. G-3 Proof 3/8 for 30 feet. Backed by 150 of 3/4 3 strand nylon. Thanks in advance for the input.

price of chain

The price of chain isn't high because the sellers think we are high, it's because the cost of steel is high. Not all chain is the same and that's why you will see a difference in price (you get what you pay for). I haven't heard a reasonable explaination as to why the price of steel has risen so much so I supect it will go back down someday, but it is definately affecting a lot of products, not just chain. So if you can wait, then wait to buy chain. Buying it when you don't NEED it just adds to the demand and keeps the price high and no, I'm not high :)

consider scope

Conside the fact thatusing chain-rope combo for your rode you will want a 7 to 1 ratio. So for every foot of water depth you will want to have 7 feet of scope. You must also count the distance from the water to the bow roller (probably about 5 feet). That means that the rig you are suggesting will only work safely in up to 20 feet of water. You might consider going with 250 feet of 5/8 or even 1/2 inch rope. Also, 30 feet of chain is good, but you might consider 5/16 high test. It will be lighter and plenty strong enough.

Defender

usually has their warehouse sale sometime in March. You might give them a call to see what you can save on chain if you wait until then...BTW Defender will be about 2.5-3hrs + or - from the NY-CT line.

Shipping = gas for my truck

I just realized to drive there and back would be $40 in gas. Shipping is 61. I may just ship it! Ok here is the new plan. 60' of G-3 Proof 5/16 and 200' of nylon. This is for the secondary anchor (danforth).

Doghouse, why don't you

go down to the industrial district in Hampton or Norfolk or Newport News and see what can be found locally. Those industrial suppliers have everything, sometimes it pays not to be a yachtsman and just be somebody that needs a nice fat piece of chain. Don't let anybody convince you that a lighter chain will be strong enough. The purpose of the chain is to keep the pull on the anchor horizontal. I use 30 feet of 3/8 chain and have 300 feet of 5/8 nylon 3 strand for the rest of the ground tackle. Allow that you will have occasion to anchor in 30 feet and will need nearly that much total. Further in storm conditions a ten to one scope is recommended. I Googled chain and the going price for 3/8 galv grade 30 proof coil is about 2.50/foot in half drums.

Easy

Dogman: We have used this method many time with excellent success. I was a firm beliver in the old "sewing" method until we tried the "paper clip" method. Take a look at the photos and decide for yourself.

thanks for the suggestions

Thanks for the suggestion of checking in Norfolk. Defender still had a better price. Well I called West Marine, and they will match the price including shipping. So 60' of G3 acco proof for 124.24. Also, Thanks for the recomendation for the smaller rope. I always end up going overkill on that so with the 1/2 vs 3/4 It will be easy to go for the 250'. Just need to find a place to store it.

Hey Doghouse

What type of anchor are you using for your main anchor? backup? Which one of those do you consider your storm anchoDid you change the anchor roller on the H-27? I can't keep my danforth on it without it rubbing on the gelcoat.
