I have a Hunter 25.5 with Honda 9.9 outboard. As far as I can tell the external gas tank is supposed to sit in the back of the cockpit next to the motor.

There does not seem to be a place for fuel lines to run into any of the compartments. It is no big deal, but takes up some space, and I like to smoke a cigar now and again.

Any suggestions?

Anytime with gas nearby, I suggest do not smoke as anything can happen. Before selling boats, I use to be an investigator and investigated many fires over the years and you would be surprised how fires started due to far away fuel fumes.

I had the same boat, and kept my six gallon tank there without any issue for two years. It was always full, since I rarely used the engine, and had no leaks of any kind. I've had a couple of people onboard with cigars, but I made them go forward to light them.

I say if you are sure that the tank has no leaks that you'll be fine. Throw in a light breeze and I'd worry even less. That said, having a good fire extinguisher on hand is a pretty good idea if you decide to continue your habit.

I also have a 1984 25.5

My 5 gallon tank is under a cover which is hinged at the top.

here's the best picture I could find.

Thank you for all the help. The picture is great. Is that commercially purchased?
