I can't be the first person to want to install a Hummingbird Piranha 1 in a MacGregor 26d... I'd like to install the puck transducer as far forward, inside the hull, so that I can see what's coming up.. If you install in the aft storage you could ground before seeing anything ???? SO where's the the best location. Much thanks Marty

Transducer location

I have my transducer located in the bilge under the starboard seat. There is always a small amout of water there so it is shooting through water. It sits under the pump discharge hose to hold it there. Haven't had an issue in 3 years.

coax lenght?

I had similar thoughts, but ended up installing in the laz, w/ epoxy. I didnt think my hummingbird coax cable (100sx?) would reach the cockpit.... (will yours?) if the wire reaches, you could install the transducer in the forward end of the V berth. (past the water balast)... BUT this is some work. -if installing on flat plane, you are using the waterbalast... & it probably wont work... very well. first remove all the styrofoam in the v berth, then open the forward hatch. you will need to mount the transducer in the V of the hull. You will need something to immerse the transducer, say epoxy (w/ no bubbles). search archives, and you will find, pvc w/ oil, or, clay, putty, silicone, etc as the mounting conductor. this may affect drainage before the transducer... good idea, let us know if it works!

Try the V berth.

I installed my humminbird transducer under the front v berth as close to the ballast tank as possible.I laid the transducer in a pile of silicone with as few air bubbles in it as possible then covered it in more silicone. It works great.
