Local Notice to Mariners

removehtml]In chatting about cruising with a few sailing pals of mine recently (what else is there to do, it's coooooold here), I was surprised to find that only one other sailor I know ever read the "Local Notice to Mariners (LNM)." We had been discussing some changed locations of navaids and it was pointed out that these locations had been well publicized for some time in the LNMs here. Some of these sailors didn't know these notices are available electronically, others thought they only applied to commercial shipping, and others just scanned them. That got me curious to learn how many of you read these weekly outpourings from the USCG?Error: Error: expected [/URL], but found [/removehtml] instead[/removehtml]

I am not much concerned about shoaling in Pamlico sound. ;D

I used to get them mailed to me

and when they went electronic I reviewed them for awhile and then quit. There's not much that's changed around here, but when I venture further afield I review the last few monthlies.

The Canadian Coast Guard website has a subscription feature where you enter your chart numbers and weekly Notice to Mariners are e-mailed and you are notified if there any updates to your charts.

Soundings has them

I read them in Soundings monthly as well as consult the website if I'm traveling outside of familiar territory.

LNM's automatic update

Something to note for anyone going outside their normal cruising ground. If you update your ENC's or order print on demand charts the updates are already posted to the date of printing.Dennis W.S/V FullSailed

There sent to my email address

On a regular basis and in the sailing season I do read them but in the off season I don't. And I'm only interested if it applies to my cruising area.

Yes, I get them email weekly. Generally don't read them off season. Occasionally of use in season and I think as operators of water craft we have some legal responsibility to be aware of updates in them. For instance, if a buoy is listed as off station in the LNM, and you ground near it and someone is injured, you would have a reduced ability to claim it was the CG's fault. I can imagine this might apply to insurance issues as well. So, its probably good practice to review them.

Chart Updates

NOAA has a very nifty site that supplies all updates to a specific chart. Plug in your chart number and voila. Much better than sifting thru the CG's LNMs.I'm not religious about it but do like to go thru them over the winter.
