Load bearing bulkheads on H37C

Hey Cherubini Cutter owners:

Do you think the bulkeads comprising the rear cabin are load bearing? Were the chart table to be removed and the bulkead behind it, the galley opens up quite a bit. However, I don't want to remove it if it is supporting part of the load of the top deck or cabin sole.

Hi Dylan,
I don't believe any of the 'bulkheads' (more like paneling) for the H37C aft cabin are structural. Other owners have opened up that area without issues (see Mathurin II for example).
Welcome aboard BTW! Great boat and a nicer bunch of sailors you will never find. If you wish to add your boat to H37 Cutter database, please send me all the particulars - boat name, home port, Hull Identification Number, any history - via PM on this site or email to jameslegere[at]eastlink[dot]ca. I would be happy to provide you with an Excel version of the database.

The bulkhead to which my chart table is fixed has all kinds of gaps between it and the cabin liner and I don't believe it is structural. I am a bit mystified though because that is on the port side and the galley is on starboard so how would removing that open up the galley?

We did decide to remove the pocket door to the quarter berth. We sacrificed the quarter berth and now use it to store a dinghy, a life raft, two folding bikes and a foldit dock cart. Removing the door made it much easier to get that stuff in and out.

Thanks John and Jim:

My thought is that removing the enclosing door and panel around the rear cabin opens alot more space over there. The gargantuan wall to which the chart table is affixed is... a very large wall. I have gear I might like to put there or just... have more viewing space in the main area.

Course, one can always get a larger boat but I think the 37C is special. It has excellent sailing properties.

Dylan, we are up to our ears in a portlight project but it may be fun to get together some time and compare notes.

Once this is done we will be hauling out for a keel bolt and chain plate check and getting new rigging and having the rudder checked.
