Do you live aboard your boat, or hope to someday? Might you live aboard the boat you have, or would you have to go larger? I lived aboard a Hunter 34 (sport fisher) for 3 years as a bachalor in SAN DIEGO. It was great! I am married now with a little one but would still love to live aboard. Our currant boat, a Catalina 36 would work, but I think a 40 or 47 would be better. Bob Emerald Oddysea

Made it one year

I moved aboard my Catalina 30 over a year ago. It was an experiment as well as a quick way to save some money. As it turns out, I really love it. Although I wouldn't have bought the 30 if I knew I would be a livaboard, I have adjusted my lifestyle to fit into the existing space. Southern California has a very mild climate so I really spend most of my time outside. My neighbors are great and I really sleep well listening to the waves break outside the sea wall. Someday I see a Catalina 380 or Hans Christian in my future but for now, life is good !!! Jeff s/v Suzanne

Live Aboard

I spent the first 5 yrs of boat ownership living aboard my Catalina 30. I would live aboard again in a second. There is someting not quite right about living ashore where the house is to steady and there are no water tanks to fill.

I moved onto my '89 C-30 five months ago. This was in response to my going through a divorce. Additionally, my 11 year old daughter spend a couple of nights a week and every other weeken with me. I find that I really enjoy boat life. I have most of the creature comforts i want. My daughter seems embarassed that her dad lives on a boat. I have a phone and internet connection to keep her connected. What I find lacking on my C-30 is privacy when my daughter is aboard. I also find that the C-30 lack storage. My quarter berth has become the closet. And lastly, the run to the marina showers when its really cold or raining forst thing in the morning is a pain. George Stormy Monday

Divorced aboard

I read the response with the divorced live aboard. I too am considering the prospect of living aboard after my divorce. It would have to be for the summer only with the Detroit winters being what they are. I have a C320 and have spent weekends and vacations aboard but think the layout is great for a single person. I am planning on using the V berth as my closet/storage area but am concerned about the weight in the bow. I won't have much left anyway so that shouldn't be too big of a concern. Are there any C320 live aboards out there? Any tips would be appreciated.

C-30 - Home for three years

Our C-30 was to be our "winter residence" in Florida and after a month on board we (my wife, our 2 year old son, two dachsunds, and myself)decided to sail the boat to New England, put our stuff in storage, give up the apartment, and live on board year round. After a year we sold all the stuff in storage and LOVED life on the boat. Another year and we started looking at forty footers. Unfortunately I got a promotion and my seasonal job became year round in R.I.. We bought a house and the boat stayed out of the water for 3 years as I've completely refit it. The moral: Don't wait until you line up all of your ducks in a row before you move on board and sail away -- Do it and everything falls in place because you MAKE it happen!!

Not While I'm Working

It would be fun for a year or so while cruising, but not while I still have to get up and go to work every morning in a suit and tie. I'd want to go a little bigger than my C-30, but not too big (36 max).
