Liveaboards in major cities

The earlier question about the lack of liveaboard marina space in SF Bay intrigued me. What is the situation elsewhere, such as Tampa Bay, Miami, Houston, Seattle, New York, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia, to name a few? Would it be possible to live aboard at a mooring, and just dink to shore for every trip? Is it possible to live aboard year round in winter climates such as Boston?

Tough, but possible, in Seattle

Last I heard it was difficult in Seattle to find liveaboard moorage, and you pay a premium for it, but it's generally possible if you're persistent and don't need it yesterday. Weather-wise it's fine, though damp. A good heater is important, as is all the anti-condensation strategies you can find.

still liveaboards in seattle?

I read last year that Seattle was thinking about banning liveaboards in the city. Any truth to that? Just curious. Chris -Blue Light Special-

Yes, still live-aboards in Seattle

The previous commissioner of public lands for the state of Washington last year had a problem, one of many. The newly-elected commissioner as of January does not, at least with the live-aboard issue and DNR lands.

Houston Liveaboards

Easy to liveaboard year-round here. Slip rates vary from about $5-$7 per slip foot, electricity is metered and there's usually a surcharge for liveaboards of $25-$75 a month. Russ

Chicago Liveaboards

In the Chicago area there are 7 harbors. Some have facilities for showering, etc. but most do not. If you belong to one of the Yacht Clubs, they do. The Harbors are only open from ~May 15th to the end of October. All boats MUST be out by then or risk confiscation. There is a good mix between moorings and fixed docks (twice as expensive as moorings). We plan on livingaboard on the weekends as Chicago is quite the vibrant city during the summer. All of the Harbors are run by The Park District and it appears they are trying to expand the facilities available at each harbor as the years go on.

St Petersurg Muni Marina

Although I wouldn't call St. Pete a "major city" it is one of the few places in the Tampa area that allows liveaboards. Several hundred boats are liveaboard. Shower and laundry facilities are on hand, and you are right downtown.

Livaboards in FL

I am investigating the livaboard conditions in FL. Other than the email from St. Petersburg, is anyone aware of other cities/marinas that are livaboard-friendly? If you can recommend a specific marina, that would be very helpful.
