Hello everyone, I am interested in getting out of this rat race in the Bay Area and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a liveaboard berth in Los Angeles. I won't be in a position to move for about six months. Thanks

Moving from a rat race to a.....

rat infested jungle. No offense Tom or any of you wonderful So. Cal. people (I was one), but do you know what you are getting into by moving to Southern California. Travel on the freeways in So.Cal. during most of the day or nite and you can be looking at averaging 20-30 mph on the freeways if things aren't too bad. Have you thought about moving inland to Sacramento or someplace where life is a little quieter? If you gotta go I'm sure that some of these fine HOW members in MDR can point you in the right direction.

Live Aboard Slips in SoCal

There are plenty in Marina Del Rey, Redondo Beach and San Pedro. When you think you are within about 60 days, repost and you can get some specifics. I doubt you can book six months in advance, but you can try Mariners Bay in Marina Del Rey. Good Luck. RD

OK, Steve, and the 880 ,101 and 280...

..move HOW fast? Last month, I think I could have walked faster than it took me from the City to Union City and from there to SFO. Heck, anybody around LA knows to just push the guy in front if they slow less than 80. Unless they are armed, of course..... ;>)

No Mr Mckee

When I was a Californicator, I lived in Southern Cal, which I only consider LA, Orange Co. Riverside adn San Bernadino Co. You know you guys have always lived in a different state (maybe slight confusion but definetly a different state) <haha>. I just go down to the LA area 2-3 times per year and have not figured out why they just keep on comming. I love to visit, I love the weather but I like going home even better.

Thanks Rick

And for Steve... I am well aware of how bad the traffic is there -- and the smog, but I have freinds and family down there that I had to leave when my company moved me up here. Besides, it is way too depressing around here with all the dotcommers whining about how they can't pay their lexus payment.

Hey Rick,

isn't it a bitch. Lexus', and the SUV's that they drive back and forth to work getting 10 mpg and such. I figure that in about June there is going to be a flood of used cars and boats on the market in No. Cal. They will be beggin the poor people to buy their used stuff.<haha> Hope you enjoy So. Cal. My son, wife and grand kids all live there and really enjoy seeing them. The traffic is just beyond my comprehension (which is quite low anyway). We love to go to the beach in Feb when the weather is 80 deg. Lotsa good stuff to help offset the bad. My take on your move was just trading one rat race for another, obviously you already know what you are getting into.

Steve I know you Like Sacto, but

I drive up there all the time and it just aint my cup of tea. I like being a little closer to the sea. Besides, I think the gold rush is hitting there as well. By the way, don't say anything else nice about LA or you will jinx me and everyone else will want to move there.

Long Beach

Tom, We lived aboard in the Downtown Marina from Nov 98 to Jun 99 and had a great time. It has good access to the Pacific - Catalina, MDR, Huntington, Newport and even Dana Point is close. We made 8 trips to Catalina in the 8 months there. And since you know the area, you know HOW easily it is to access the freeways (it's just some times hard to exit them). Plus you get 4 tickets to the Long Beach GP in April. If the weather gets really bad, you can still sail in Long Beach Bay inside the breakwater. We joined the local yacht club there and instantly had a bunch of friendly boaters willing to share thier experiences and time to make our stay one full of treasured memories.

2nd Long Beach

I'll second the Long Beach suggestion -- we don't live aboard but have our boat there. LB is considered one of the best marina deals in the area. There's a short waiting list to get a slip and then you can apply for a live aboard permit. They're refurbishing slip holders' facilities on shore (rest rooms, laundry, mail facilities) and you are in walking distance of great downtown restaraunts. There's also good bus service (some free) to other shopping/dining parts of town. Contact the Long Beach City Marine Bureau for more info.

Live Aboard

Long Beach would be an excellent choice. I pesonally would be wary of Marina del Rey; too corrupt, overcrowded, and not boater friendly. I worked and had a boat there. I think choosing a marina would depend on where you will be working. Long Beach/Alamitos Bay is another excellent choice. But for me it's the West Channel area of San Pedro, because I don't need all the restaurants and shopping of Long Beach. Markets and fast food are available in San Pedro, and there's a West Marine 10 min. from my slip in Holiday Harbor.
