Hi, on the 1979 hunter 27, at the aft in the cockpit, there is a built in well. was it intended to be a cooler? a live-well, a covered locker? right now there are two boards covering it. what is it????

heh

I have the same thing.. I was gonna convert it into an LPG locker but never did. I just keep it now for a live-well when my girlfriend catches dinner... (I hooked up the old spare bilge pupmp to flush water through it keeping dinner alive and fresh as long as possible) But I think the overall basis is that it was for a gas tank if the boat came with an outboard.. Obviously you have an inboard like myself, which is a better thing.

never had outboard from factory

This model of Hunter came with and inboard. Every single 27 produced from 1975 thru 1984... So it was not a fuel locker for an outboard. What is it however?

Cockpit cooler<G>

We use the well as a cockpit cooler most of the time, as well as a place to toss empties <G>. We had this teak seat made to fit into the well, perfect height for helmsman comfort at the wheel. Seat lifts out to store in the cabin when not is use. I also have a teak laminate lid for the well original with the boat. Handy storage...I like the space

Wondered the same thing

I thought it may be some obviously important thing with a special name - guess not. It's on my 76, and I wonder since it disappers in later models if it was related to the change from tiller to wheel. I guess i dont know how the later rudder posts are constructed.

I have a tillrer

I have a tiller and the box is there.. 1979 h27 here.. I guess there really is no fancy name or purpose for it, just whatever we can deem a use for is probably the more logical solution if the boat never came with an outboard. Although I am curious about Jim's chair and the traveler....

Curious? Jim Wasko?

Jim, you mention that you are curious about my teak seat and traveller? It presents absolutely no problem, this boat is a simple relaxing day sailer or weekend cruiser for me, I don't race it, I rarely move the traveller car. Generally my traveller is set a few degrees port or starboard of my respective leg, and left in that position. If I need to change the position of the car, I just get up and do it. Simple. Here's a better image, although the setting just happens to be where it is at the dock right now. The car rides smoothly in front of the seat on the track. The Edson wheel system has been added recently, you can see the rudder post is still there for emergency tiller. Admiral likes the wheel, and when Admiral is at the helm I can nap. We have a Columbia Contender that we race, H-27 is for relaxing on the water.

Thanx Jim

Thank you for the photo, I wasn't sure how you dealt with the possible pain to the family jewels (as my girlfriend wants this now) and I guess, if you don't move the traveler a lot, then it's probably a non-issue. Of course the issue I have now, is, adding a wheel and making the seat...

I own a 1976 Hunter 27' we use it for a cooler, it has a drain plug, fill with ice > cold drinks all day!

Five Years later ...

I've been wondering the same since I bought my H27 five years ago. I've heard it referred to as an "Ice chest" but since there's no cover I've ever seen that makes no sense. It doesn't seem that strange with a tiller model, but I have wheel steering and the traveller on the cabin. So, it looked kind of funny just having that open well - like there was something missing.. I built a custom removeable helm seat, as well as stern rail seats, and it makes a big difference - opening up the cockpit area behind the wheel for guests. See photo.

curious too

I also have one of these also (hunter 78. It has a wooden lid on it and a drain. However, it collects a lot of dirt and debris. It is a pain to clean out. I have my traveler over the entrance hatchway so that there is an 8 inch wide wooden seat over the stem of the rudder. This makes it dificult to take out the lid.I will take a photo and post it later if it may be of interest to anyone. Perhaps we should ask Hunter what this was for?
