Lowell

I live in Texas and are intrested in moveing to Hawaii to attend college and indulge in its beauty, I would like to know what type of boat is needed and how much training and help is required to sail to hawaii(Oahu), equally important would be to know how I can live on board(do you have to pay someone to let you park your boat at thier dock?) if youve done something similar to this or have any advice please email me at willwilliamson@hotmail.com

it could be a better idea to fly there and buy a boat when you get settled in and save that long dangerous voyage. john

Get Thee to a Library

Jan.7, 2000 Dear Lowell, Are you planning going around Cape Horn or is the Panama Canal more to your taste? Or perhaps your thinking of sailing off in the other direction and tackling either the Med and the Suez Canal or the Cape of Good Hope? As you can see, your question raises lots of different considerations. Not to be rude mate, but your question requires more answer than a simple web site posting can provide. if your serious, get yourself to the library and start reading the many excellent books written by those that have been there and done it. Right now your learning curve is very steep, but their is help to be found in those books. You might contact a local sailing school and try taking some sailing lessons to see if you are going to like sailing and then consider taking a charter boat vacation to gain some more experience. Good Luck, Brian Pickton of BeneteauOwners.net

And Where in Texas?

After all El Paso is closer to San Diego than it is to Galveston.

The fine line between having a dream & dreaming...

Most people on this board are here because "they have a dream" and nearly all of of us have learned to encourage rather than discourage each other's dreams, even though "the dream" may often remain just beyond reach (BTW next Monday is Martin Luther King Day). Some of us, however, are "just dreaming" and may be better served by a gentle wake-up call before their dreams turn into protracted nightmares. You, my friend, appear to be in the latter category. How can one tell the difference? Simple. You don't have just one little dream but at least four BIG ones: (1) to successfully attend college in Hawaii (3 years and lots of $$$); (2) to own an offshore-capable sailboat (minimally US $ 100,000 or a LOT of sweat equity); (3) to become a capable ocean sailor (several years in the School of Hard Knocks); and (4) to find a berth in Alawai harbor (6-year waiting list..........) Many people spend a sizeable part of their life just trying to realize any one of these! Perhaps you could start realizing dream # 1 (while trying not to over-indulge yourself in beauty till your college education starts paying off). Good luck! Flying Dutchman

Keehi Lagoon?

May one still anchor there for free? You used to be able to set up your own mooring even put up a mailbox and you were all set with a Sand Island Access Rd address. I went the University of Hawaii and it was tough getting to school. Left turn Manoa right Waikiki. Often there was more parking at the beach so we ended up there as often as in class. Go to school up north where there are fewer distractions.
