I have spotted pencil eraser sized spots on the hull of my H23. some have cracks across the diameter. I have sanded the gel coat and most of the spots cannot be seen after that treatment. However, the cracks in the larger spots remain. I have used a dremel tool to grind some of the cracks past the gel coat expecting to find moisture but have found sound glass and resin. This bottom is bare and has never been painted. Has anyone out there observed the type of spots I have described? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks Marc

Mine too.

Did they develop over time – or did you just notice them? My ’98 H26 is being repaired right now for that – about 8 to 10 sq. ft.. (I call them a pimple because they don’t look like the blisters I’ve seen on other boats.) I don’t know if they had water under them as the (former) Hunter dealer is repairing them. Was told that when the hull was laid up, the area wasn’t covered by epoxy before the gel coat was put on. Hunter warranty person said I should bottom paint the boat. Something I wasn’t prepared to do. My boat too sits in fresh water about 5 months of the year – and once you bottom paint a boat, you then have a maintenance schedule. Also the cost. Hunter wasn’t going to pay for the bottom paint, reasonable, yet difficult to understand why they are saying that the boat needs bottom paint to be in the water.

Michael, I did notice the spots last year when I bought the boat. they were about the same size after I hauled it home last November. All summer in fresh water and one week at the coast. Not what I would call typical blisters. The boat is 11 years old and in VERY good shape eccept the pimples as you called them. Could you provide the name of the person that you have hired to do the repairs? I have started the process on my own treating them as typical blisters. Perhaps I can save some steps, money or both! It's too bad Hunter did't have a better response in your case. I still love our H23 even if it has these little spots. If you would have any other tips I would be greatful. You can reach me directly at bbird@cvc.net Thanks Marc

Who knows

With age I have seen them too. Best advice if there are no blisters is to leave it alone unless the coloration simply bothers you. As you indicated, no water and glass was peach keen. Crazy Dave
