List to Port

Can anyone think of a reason for a persistent list to port? The list is
about 3 to 5 degrees. I have tried redistributing the weight in the cockpit
lockers and the cabins. I have checked that the mast is vertical to the
plane of the deck (as gauged by the mainsheet measuring the same length to
the toe rail on each side).
Is there something obvious I have forgotten? Should I stop worrying about
it?

Have you tried dropping a plumb line from the top of the mast to
confirm the list and rule out optical illusions? A light line on the
spinnaker halyard should do the trick.
I assume you've accounted for the heavy stuff, such as fuel, outboard,
anchors, batteries, crew.

Thanks, Alastair. Yes, and I have two clinometers (dont ask me why. The
Admirable uses one to tell me it's time to reef). And I have moved the
crew, skipper, toolboxes, dinghy, fuel, etc, around. By loading everything
to the starboard side it is possible to get level, but there isnt room in
the starboard lockers to take the whole ship's inventory. I am sure it was
not like this last year. Any other thoughts anyone?

Maybe a discussion on Vega ballast? Although internal, can it shift?

I would think that the ballast could not shift. Besides the lead at the
bottom and then the iron, there is a mixture of poly and sand installed.
Having worked on many boats with internal ballast, the mixture is pour in
the fills any void between the metal and the fiberglass. In some cases I
have seen an iron shot used, but that doesn't seem to be the case with the
Vega (although I could be wrong).

About the list. You didn't mention any additions or changes made to the
boat during the winter layover. Was any cabinetry changed or added? New
tanks? Even changes to the rigging, new anchor added etc. 3 to 5 degrees
isn't a lot and can be balanced out pretty easily.

There was no internal refitting. The only work done was new engine
mountings and the mast was removed for the winter while the boat was
ashore. I thought it must be a rigging problem and I thought I would find I
had tensioned the cap stays unevenly, but when I checked, the mast seemed
exactly vertical to the plane of the deck, as I said. It doesn't sound like
much of a list, but it is very obvious, and I was quite serious when I said
that I could only get her level by shifting all heavy items to starboard.

Perhaps I shouldn't worry about it?

Thanks to everyone for your interest. I will let you know if it resolves
itself, one way or another.
