Either in March or June I 'm looking of an inexpensive week of coastal sailing with calm to moderate seas. We aren't looking for the perfect storm. and we don't care to motor sail. I normally sail a Hunter 34 and race a J22. I have been to the Caribbean. Seems that there should be some fun places to rent for a week either in the Atlantic, Pacific , Florida Keys or Gulf other than the well traveled Caribbean. I want to rent a bare boat, provision it and set to sea for a week.. size 32-42 foot. how about around of suggestions for routes, charter companies, etc. This Texan is tired of being landlocked. I can be calledat 214 244 5239. I'll pay outright or swap time in a house in Dallas with a J22 nearby and with a Hunter 34 in Texoma. Regards, Jim 214 244 5235

Bare Boat Charters

Ever consider the Great lakes. The North Channel on Lake Huron is one of the best cruising areas in the world. Canadian Yacht Charters in Gore Bay has several great Hunters you can bare boat. They have a web site at www.cycnorth.com

Great Lakes best in June.

You can see boats/prices at our marina in Huron, Ohio at: http://www.harbornorth.com/ Islands and Canada to start, great marinas and achorages. Or go up the Detroit river thru Lake St. Clair to Lake Huron. North Channel on Lake Huron is fabulous(http://www.continuouswave.com/north-channel/marianneBay.html) but might be a little cool before July. South of the Carolina's it can get really warm in June.

charter

Great Lakes is a good suggestion, but only if lake levels rise, which is not predicted for the immediate future. Also, the words "cheap" and "charter" usually don't go together. And in my experience, if your'e cruising, your going to end up motoring anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 of the time. Geez, I hate to be bearer of bad news. Don't kill the messenger!

P.S.

A great place to charter is the Charlotte Harbor area of FL--Sanibel, Captiva, Caya Costa preserve, Cabbage Key, Ft. Myers Beach, Punta Gorda. Check out Southwest FL Yachts at www.swfyachts.com

Second the SW Fla Yachts suggestion

About three years ago my wife and I took a week-long sailing class with SW Fla Yachts, then went back two springs ago and took their H36 out for a week. This last Spring I had my own H336 to sail out of the same port, Burnt Store Marina. It is a great sailing spot during March, I'll be back there this spring. If you have not sailed Charlotte Harbor and the surrounding area you should strongly consider it as an option. Enjoy wherever you go, Rodney S/V AVANTI

Speak softly Ed!

You are right about the North Channel, has to be the very best in North America. Jim, I have a hunter 335 in the North Channel that I might just trade for a while. If you are interested reply to this post and we can talk further.

charlotte harbor florida

I admit I'm a bit partial to the Charlotte Harbor area but this is the BEST sailing in the entire country. South West Florida is gunk-hole central. There is great off shore sailing with average seabreeze winds in summer of 10-15 kts in the afternoons. The one down side is the heat in summer and the storms, they can be a real hair raiser. I've lived and sailed here for 15 years and I'm still exploring new spots just a day's sail away. If you've never sailed Charlotte Harbor your truly missing the boat. If that's not enough, the fishing on the SW coast of FL. is probably better than the keys, we haven't killed our harbor's and bays like in the keys, the fish still thrive here. Check out this web site (I have NOTHING to do with this company, they just have a great reputation in the area). www.sailwindquest.com

Lake Superior- - Apostle Islands

A "must see" on your list should be the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior out of Bayfield, WI. That time of year offers exceptional sailing among the 22 islands. If open water sailing is your preference the Lake also offers unlimited sailing adventure outside of the Islands. Contact Superior Charters 1-800-772-5124, or www.superiorcharters.com. Included in their 65 sailboat fleet is a 34 foot Hunter (Jolly Swagman) that may be of interest to you.

Try the San Juans in Washington

Take a look at the San Juan island area of WASHINGTON state. There are a few charter companies out of Seattle. I sailed there with friends last Aug. and the places to go , wind, and Scenery is TOPS. One drawback... THE WATER IS COLD.

San Juan Island and Puget Sound

I have sailed my 23.5 throughout the Puget Sound and have not been bored yet. There are lots of marinas and anchorage's. The sights you can see here are not like anywhere else. Orca whale pods are always around and during the time frame you looking at, they should be pretty easy to find. March is still pretty cool but June is perfect. Anacortes and Bellingham which are north of Seattle have charter services. Seattle of course has many charter services also, and is just a day sail away. Additionaly, you could always sail to Victoria, Canada, it is very close to the San Juan Island. Yes, the water is cold year round. If you need any information let me know if I can help.

Desolation Sound in British Columbia is great

The water is warm in places there especially in areas which do not have much tidal exchange and and also later in the summer. It was 68 degrees last September in Tenidos Bay. Magnificent place and very little civilization. There are warm waterfalls to bath in and lakes to walk to with rope swings for swimming from. The scenery is nothing short of spectacular. Lots of anchorages and places to hide. The water tends to be deep near to shore and you will usually need to stern tie to shore. Some places are so deep that I literally backed the boat close enough to shore that I could tie a stern line around a tree trunk without getting off. There are several books describing this area as well as the San Juan and Canadian Gulf Islands. For charter information, you could try contacting places in Seattle, Vancouver, Victoria, Sydney, Ganges, or Naniamo. Someone could refer you to a suitable charter company.
