Just recently hooked up a Link20 battery monitor and it has confirmed a problem I seem to have. No matter which way I have the battery switch thrown, I still seem to be drawing current from both amps. Bank 1 only has the Bilge pump directly to it and Bank 2 has a memory lead for a radio. There ends up being about a 10% "bleed through" on the non-selected battery bank. Has anybody ever seen this and no what I can do about it????

Wiring Problems

I have a new 2001 Hunter 320, and have encountered many wiring problems and substandard workmanship, so I don't think anything would surprise me on wiring now. I had the bilge pump wired to the switched side of the battery switch, and LOTS of bare wire where splices were placed. The only other thing that is wired directly to your batteries (or should be according to the prints) that you didn't mention, is the battery charger. Jumpers are placed in between banks 1, 2, & 3, and one should be removed for each bank that is installed. If they are not taken out, all your battery banks will be wired together no matter what position you battery isolation switch is in. Once you are sure that your banks are not tied together, try turning off all the breakers to isolate the drain (if you haven't already.) Then try removing the wires from the isolation switch and checking again. You can get to these by pulling the vertical panel on the inside of the settee behind the switch (two screws on the bow side). Use caution that you remove the ground wires from the batteries or the ground stud before you start pulling the hot leads or jumpers. Put the ground back on after pulling a hot, and recheck for a drain. Good luck, and let me know if you find any bare wires that I haven't found yet. Steve

Charger jumpers???

Where are these battery charger jumpers that "tie" the batteries together?

Charger Jumpers

Greg, On my 290 the jumper wires are right at the charger. You should be careful regarding disconnecting. Check your manuals first. My charger requires that all three leads be hooked to a battery. If you remove one jumper, then that terminal needs to go to an additional battery. In my 290 there was one jumper and two leads that ran to the #1 post on the battery switch. If yours is wired with one lead to post #1 and one lead to post #2 that might put the batteries in parellel. Good luck and let us know what the outcome is. My experience with some of the Hunter wiring decisions is similar to Steve's.... although I've not found any bare wires yet. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije)

Fixed thanx to HOW!

Steve & Dan, Thank you for the help with this. The jumpers on the charger was the culprit!. Can't really blame Hunter on this one. The dealer put the second battery bank in and didn't pull the jumper. I talked to the folks who make the ProTech charger and they said it did not matter which jumper got pulled, but that all three outputs had to have a load and that is why the jumpers are installed in the first place. He also indicated that you should connect the house bank to the top (farthest away from the NEG terminal) POS terminal. Something to do with the sensing logic that determines the feedback from the banks... Thank you again and thanx to HOW!!
