Lines Led Aft on H23

Anyone done this, for the main and jib of course. Looks liek the corners of the cabin would be good and strong points for a cleat. What hardware should I use on the mast ? Also, did anyone run a 'reverse-line' (that's what I call it as I don't know) on the jib ? It would be a line to pull the jib down and keep it down (instead of letting it fall). I also wonder if anyone did this on the main too, so it can be pulled down in 35 knots of wind...

One approach

Mike, I ran my halyards aft by cutting a new exit on my mast so both of them came out on starboard, then led them down to a set of turning blocks side by side on a common axel. From there, the lines go to turning blocks set flat at the outside of the doghouse level with the mast. Then they go aft to a double rope clutch, with a winch right behind it. As for lines to pull the sails down, I never thought of it. It would be interesting to hear if anyone has tried that notion. Jim Kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo

Jib downhaul

I used to crew for somebody who rigged a line to pull the jib down from the cockpit on a Catalina 22. It was handy when the wind was really screaming, but kind of a pain most of the time. One more thing to keep straight and keep from fouling other lines. Also, once the sail is down you'll still have to go forward to secure it.

My Jib Downhaul

I rigged up a downhaul for my jib on my 23.5. I used a couple of D shackles and blocks one on the pulpit the other on one of the stanchions and then put a cleat on the stanchion closest to the cockpit. Tie a ring around the end of a 3/16 line and hook it up to the head of the sail when you raise it and your all set. It is not in the way at all once the line is coiled and stashed on the cleat. The first trip you don't have to make up there when it's blowin and rocking makes it worth the effort.

Reason for leading aft

The main reason I'm doing this of course is to avoid going up front in a lot of wind. I was caught out in 35+/- knots last week. Didn't know if I'd make it back to shore.

lines aft and 135/150 gennoa

It would be great if someone who has done either of these on a H23 would be kind enough to post pictures. THanks Gary

Downhauls

I tied a 1/8" line to the top hank of the jib, through every other hank, the carabiner I hank the clue with, a fair lead on the bow and dropped the end of the line in the companionway. For the main I tied the line to the top slug and dropped the other end in the companionway. Standing in the companion way I can release the clutches on the starboard side of the coach roof and pull on the downhauls easily. Crude, but it works and only cost a few dollars for the Ace Hardware clothsline. When the main downhaul went flying out like a wind penent one day I learned to tie the lower end to the grab rails.

Block sizes ?

Anybody have models and sizes of what blocks would be best on a H23 ?
