Lines leading aft kit from Cat Direct or piece together

Currently my halyards all go to the base of the mast and not much further. The lines are old and the wire halyards are turning into meat hooks. I looked at the Halyards to Cockpit external kit on Catalina Direct and it’s priced at $479 right now (1984 Catalina 22) is this a decent price or would I be better off piecemealing this together and possibly getting better hardware? Thank you

I dont know what that kit includes, but it your sheaves can handle all rope, it would be cheaper to just measure what you need and replace the halyards

If the sheaves need replacing because they are damaged and will chew up non-metal halyards then they need replacing or if they are not spinning freely they need replacing, Garhauer has nice ball bearing blocks that will fit.

As for the halyards themselves, I'd shop around. All you need is length and diameter. This will give you more control over the type of line you would use, for example a line with less stretch.

As has been said, it depends on what you need. But, I have never been disappointed with the value received from Catalina Direct. If you need everything in that kit, you probably can't do it any/much cheaper for similar quality.

Thank you, it’s not a bad kit and has dyneema to replace the wire halyards, along with blocks and guides for each side of the cockpit. I posted the list below. I imagine I will be happy with the kit.

Two spectra core lines (red makers and blue markers)
• Two Ball Bearing single blocks
• Four new masthead sheaves for line
• Two Ball Bearing double sheave deck organizers
• Two aluminum cam cleats
• All the hardware necessary for installation
Mast step halyard plate
• Instructions
• Even the sealant is included

I could just do the lines but I need the blocks to organize the line to the cockpit, the kit has all of those part.

You can always take the list, look up each of the parts and price them out.
There's probably savings in the halyards alone. I wouldn't think dyneema halyards are needed unless you are racing. I'd look up the parts on defender.com, Garhuarer.com and maybe a few other sites, even amazon.com and don't forget this site.
You may be able to shave off $10 to $20 but unless you can find a site that has all the components you may be paying more for shipping.
The kit does appear to be complete. Probably not worth the time trying to build it piecemeal.

Thank you, this is precisely the advice I was looking for.

$479 from one place and guaranteed to fit, why bother doing anything else. I have always found CD to be fairly priced and good (Catalina) quality.

If you have external halyards, now might be a good time to run the halyards internally as well. The CD video series of C-22 repairs goes into the installation of internal halyards in one of their videos. You might get with CD Tech Services to see which volume includes the internal kit and to determine if this mod’s one you want to tackle. I think these vidoes are great primers for doing your own maintenance but you do need keep in mind that while it looks easy in the video, you need to be a good judge of your own abilities before you tackle any of the more major upgrades. In my opinion sometimes it’s easier to get with your marina and get a quote for their services and then order the parts for someone else to do the work. Just a thought…

Thanks but no desire to do that.

Fair enough. The kit that CD sells includes everything that you should need. When I upgraded my halyard plate, I opted to use Marine Grade Butyl tape as opposed the the sealant CD provides. I think you'll enjoy having the lines lead aft. It's a good upgrade.
