Lines Aft

I'm relatively New to sailing. Bought my 83' C22 last year and am real happy with it. It currently has the wire/line halyards. After a year of pretty intense learning, I see the need for aft-led halyards. I'm close to being sold on CD's all-line halyard led aft kit (It's expensive tho, would it be cheaper to part out at W. Marine?). My only concern is it seems that the halyard winch on the mast would now be useless. I've heard of folks placing the halyard winch on the pop-top. If anyone has done this, can I see some picts? On top of all this, the CD kit comes with Harken Cam cleats. I would be more inclined to have Rope Clutches with the winch on the pop-top setup. I'd be grateful for any thoughts/pictures for a new yet learning fast sailor.

I have been researching the same subject and the best outline I have come across is on the sailnet archives forum back in august of last year the artical is titled "leading sail control lines aft". I would attach it but only the diagram comes up. You need the equipment listing also. If you can not find it email me at jeff@oklokcriss.com I can sent you all the info I have collected. Jeff

halyards running aft

There will soon be a tech post on C22 fleet 52's website on this very issue. clutches were used and lines from C/D (a present) were used they can be bought from Pelican (no color choice) there was also N/E line used on a second boat I'd say it will be on the site in the next week w/break down of cost and pictures.

Why do you need a winch ?

You can lead the lines aft without worrying about access to a winch. You see a Cat22 don't need no winches to raise the sails. You can manually raise them without too much trouble. I can usually raise the main or the jib in about 5-10 seconds. A winch would be slower. I have some pictures of the single-handed rigging set-up of my C22 on my web page. see link below. Have fun.

I have a 1980 catalina 22. I used the cd kit for haylards to the cockpit. It worked great but in stead of using thecam cleats I used lumar rope clutches. They work great. I also put two and anderson winches on the cabin top. Not on the pop top. The anderson winches are small in diameter and fit on the cabin top nicely. Im very happy with this set up , Ken
