I'm thinking about purchasing a Hunter 1978 33. I was wondering if this line extending across the keel is normal, or if it has had some kind of repair.

There are also some small hairline cracks on the deck where the mast attaches, is this a big concern. There doesn't seem to be any depression

Thank you

I see you are on-line. I have a 1978 33'. Send me a PM with a contact number if you want to know what to look for in the 1978-1983 Cheribuni Hunters.

Looks like someone tried a lame keel joint repair sometime in the history of the boat. Are the keel bolts intact with no rust?

The deck step cracks appear cosmetic.

Both issues should be included in a survey of the boat to be sure.

My '79 H33 has the same line on the keel. I think its just the joint where the keel meets the hull stub.

I agree. I have the same line on my '82 H30.

The gel coat cracks at the mast step do not look serious either.

The line is the joint between the hull stub and the keel, I ground it out and refilled it on my 78 HC The mast step look's fine from your photo I also replaced mine but it was soft and bad from water intrusion. Yours looks to be fine.

The keel line is perfectly normal. The mast base cracks to me indicate water intrusion and a need to recore the area. A survey with a good moisture meter in knowledgeable hands would take away some of the guessing. However, since the mast is out, why not pop out a bolt or two and inspect the innards?

The keel to hull joint line is perfectly normal. Any bolt on keel like this will flex while sailing, so it must be able to move side to side. Fill the crack with a flexible sealant (not 5200) , like a Sikaflex or equivalent product for underwater use. Inspect at each haulout and reseal as required. If you see any expansion of your joint line it might require re-torqueing the keel bolts which should be done at approx 10-20 year intervals dependant upon use of the boat. Check with Hunter for the keel bolt torque values so that you do not over-tighten.
If you want to see a better view of the keel-hull joint just find any C&C on the hard and see the "C&C smile" - I had 2 of them to monitor prior to purchasing my H-30 this year.
