Lightning strike

My H-26 was struck by lightning last summer. There was significant damage but luckily, we were not on the boat and no one was injured. I understand that there is a reasonably good chance that the wiring is OK although the electronics are destroyed. I posted an article last fall and one response dealt with the specific instrument (a mega-ohm meter ??) that should be used to detect any damage to the wiring that occurred in areas where visual inspection was not possible. Any information, insight, experiences anyone can share with me would be helpful as the boat is now in the shop getting repaired. Thanks.

Steve, Electronics generally get fried. I assume battery is ok. There is a fuse on the red line to it. See if blown and replace. Need to have boat lifted up and check the centerboard trunk housing since lightning will dissapate through the hull and the trunk housing. Generally, we found the wiring ok excet for the light base plug for the mast. Based on a H 26 that I repaired last year due to a strike. also check the r;unning and mast light. Crazy Dave

H240 struck while moored

Our H240 was struck by lightning in Aug 99 while moored in our local lake. It was a hum dinger of a thunder storm. To make a long story short, the hull damage required totaling the boat. Our insurance through Boat US paid off and we bought a new 2000 model. It's called Deja Vu

Lightning ???

We have been out on days with rain and some distant lighting. Peers have advised us to stay on shore when the weather is threatening or at least stay clear of the rigging. Has anyone come across any good information reguarding sailing and lighting. The mast ground on our H23 seems pretty skimpy and I have not heard anyone advise beefing this up.
