lighter adaptor for gps?

hi i just got my garmin 492 today. im wondering if i can use the lighter above sink? does it have the correct amps and does it go directly to battery. the owners manual does not address this thanks alan

I use it

I have an adaptor near the helm and always use my GPS with it. I sail a C 320 and my hand held GPS backs up to the radar / chartplotter /GPS which is wired directly. John s/v Lady K
