Lifting slings for Vega

Hello all,

I was wondering if any of you knew the correct lengths for a sling to
lift my Albin Vega with a crane. The slings will have to come to one
point. I searched past messages, but did not find anything.
Thanks a lot,

Hi;

I have my Vega hauled out (for a bottom paint job) next
week. I guess any marina with haul-out facilities should
have slings- so why worry? Just make sure the after sling
doesn't hit the rudder.

Don't forget that the prop shaft is above and seperate to the rudder so the sling has to grap the hull above the shaft and be clear of the prop shaft

Hi Denis;

what you say is right, but I always have both slings under
the keel (I've marks at the waterline and make sure the
sling isn't on the rudder- besides, I always check before
the boat is lifted).

I just had my Vega ("Vega Lyra") out for bottom work - I posted a photo on the "Photos"
section of our group that shows you where the straps went - one way in the front, the
other under the keel (well ahead of the rudder/propellor). Hope this helps. - Sebastian

The photo is a great idea. I keep a couple of photos of my boat on
board in the maintenence log to show the lift operators the shape of
the keel and previous placement of the slings. This came in really
handy last summer when I had to be hauled out up north at Queen
Charlotte Strait because of a breakdown. All that was available was a
marine ways, and the yard, used to hauling out large fishing boats,
was extremely reluctant to haul a sailboat until I showed them a
photo of the full keel. In this case no slings are used, but the keel
must be long enough to fit across the beams on the rail car. Worked
perfectly. I hope this helps.

The photo of Lyra reflects the same lifting points we used when
hauling out Blue Fin last fall.

I also noted Wilhelm's picture of V 257. Is there a way to access the
larger file--I'd like to have a closer look. I have a high speed
connection so file size is not a problem.

Hi All

In the Uk we seem to have one sling just forward of the keel and the other one between the prop and the hull as far forward as it will go but you must ensure the sling is above the prop in the gap and not under the prop!!

The yard where I have hauled out always lines up the after sling with the bridge deck bulkhead which places the sling just forward of the rudder. the forward sling goes just forward of the keel.
