Lifting In/Out - *aft* strap position?

Hi.
I'm having my boat lifted back in on Friday (Yo!).

The aft strap position was a problem when it was lifted out in November.
The crane operators were not able to get the aft strap under the keel -
instead they place the aft strap under the extreme forward end of the
rudder - which is obviously just aft of the keel and is slightly higher
allowing the strap to be placed there.

Is it OK to apply a load there? I was slightly unhappy but it doesnt
seem to have done any harm to the rudder..

Is there a technique which allows the aft strap to be worked forward
under the keel?

Or is the obvious/easy place (as above) the right place to locate the
aft strap?

Thanks
John

Hi John

Place is to put the strop as far aft just over the transom, hold it tight agianst the hull and move it forward until it can go no further. Make sure it goes in the space between the prop and the hull and NOT on the prop. Keep it taut until the crane takes the tension. Ive helped to lift many Vegas and found this teh best way by far.

Hi:
I have to lift my Vega at least once a year. I have small markers on the boot stripe telling the operator where to place the belts.
Make sure the aft belt is NEVER over the rudder, but just forward on the keel. The forward belt can be anywhere, because it depends on the type of lift mechanism you use.

If I might suggest the following. Either photocopy the side-view drawing or
download it from the online manual on the web. My travel lift operator
appreciates seeing the configuration. I like Steve's suggestion, but my yard
doesn't like taking the chance sliding the travel-lift sling along the
bottom and missing the prop (probably because it is a huge capacity
travel-lift).

Personally I put the aft slings where the cockpit winches are located and
the forward slings just at the forward edge of the keel. I always have them
rope the slings together - this is most important and you become a believer
once you've seen a boat slip out of the slings - not a pretty sight. Since
the aft sling is basically under the aft side of the engine and the center
of gravity of the boat is well forward (about where the forward battery
hatch is located, if you have your batteries in the bilge) there is no
chance of the boat slipping backwards.

Like I wrote in my first answer- I have my boat lifted at least once a year, some times a second time, just to clean the prop. I remember two years ago after being away for 2 months, after coming back my boat no longer moved; the prop was completely covered with sea-grass and all the other goody-goodies that growes in tropical waters.
But back to the aft position of the sling. Have the lift operator position the aft sling just forward the rudder (you can check that, just try to move the ruder. If it moves freely, the sling is positioned ok, if the rudder doesn't want to move, have the lift operator change the position position of the sling. It's your boat, not the operator's!
After the boat is lifted, get some red (or other color) tape and put a 1/2 inch (or 2 cm) marker on the boot-stripe. Then next time you have the boat lifted, you'll know where to put the sling.
