Pull Hard:{

It is unreasonably difficult to raise the center board on the Hunter 23.5. I have found it necessary to get one or more good wraps of the rope around your hand for grip. Put one or both feet against the bulkhead and pull with all your might. Interestingly, there is a very small amount of travel between the lower and upper limits. This is probably why it is so difficult as there is poor leverage. Hope this helps...

Maybe I'm lucky

I'm pretty sure I just need one hand to raise mine - it's not a problem. Maybe yours are fouled with something? ...RickM...

If additional leverage is needed, try hanging a snatch block from your boom over the open hatch and leading the lifting line to a winch.

How is A line to the Boom Going to Help?

Just put your foot on the bulkhead and pull. If you are a diminutive person use the jib winch on the starboard side. There is an adjustment to make and it may help. Crazy Dave explained it, should be in the archives somewhere.

How is A line to the Boom Going to Help?

I'm not familiar with the particular arangement of the lifting line through the trunk. I assume it is pulled up to raise the keel. By suspending a snatch block from the boom(which can easily support the weight of the keel) and running the lifting line through it to a winch, there will be more than enough leverage to lift the keel.

Still sounds like something wrong

Mine goes up and down smoothly and quietly. Just a clunk sound when it hits top or bottom of travel if I raise or lower quickly enough to make a clunk. My boat is in cool fresh lake water, so I have no bio-matter or critters to worry about. Winching the uphaul seems to me to have the potential of breaking something that could be harder to fix then some investigation and maintenance now. I've never had occasion to have to look, but it it possible to get at any of the mechanism? ...RickM...

Third Line on Starboard Side

The first two are the halyards the third should run from a plate near the clutches for the halyards through a block attached to the line that pulls up the centerboard then to a cleat near the halyard clutches. The centerboard line runs from the centerboard through the hull and the tube on the forward side of the teak compresion post through the deck just under the mast to the block I mentioned earlier. None of the mechanisim can be touched without removing it from the bottom of the boat when up on stands. If none of that is available drop a line under your boat on either side at the bow bring it aft on either side to about half way in the cockpit you can then pull up the centerboard from around the hull. Sometimes it takes quite a tug to get it up forget about a line to the boom and listen to the others who are familiar with your boat. Let us know if you are able to figure this out or if you need more help. I'll look for pictures or take some when I go out to the boat next if that will help.

Email this Guy

He is the Hunter Dealer I bought my 23.5 from. Govert VanVelsen, I suspect he can help with any of the translations that may not be coming through between the jargon and venacular. Tell I sent you and I said hello. http://midsouthsailing.com/
