The Lifelines & stanchions are VERY loose on our H37. Any ideas/suggestions on how easy it may be to replace. Or preferrably a good craftsman in the IL/WI area. Thanks! Karen S/V Regenero

Life Line Replacement

I also have a H37 that needs the lifelines replaced. One thing I was going to do was to relocated the "gate" from the stern to the center of the mid-ship stanchons. It appears to me that it would be easier getting on and off the boat at the point that is nearest to the dock finger. I also was going to replace the turnbuckels at the bow with gate fittings since I store my dingy on the deck at the bow. It would be a lot easier with the lifelines down. All in all it would be easy to replace the lifelines after you make very exacting measurements for the rigger to follow. If you find a good source I would appreciate you passing that info on to me. My email is rgbcmy@tiac.net Thanks

Stretch

A friend of mine replaced his lifelines and purchased the new ones from West Marine. I helped install and they all were too short so we used shackels to make up the difference. He had measured from the old ones. After they were on and we tightened them up, there was enough stretch that we could remove the shackles. It would appear that there was a certain amount of stretch accounted for in the manufacture. They work fine. You may wish to discuss this with teh vendor. JSI periodically has sales were they discount the labor. You might want to check with them.

Stanchion Screws and Line Adjustment

If the stanchions are loose it is probably because the screws are loose. If this is the case it wouldn't be a surprise if there were water leaks. The only thing that keeps the water out is some sealant or bedding putty and a tight screw. If you've noticed water leaks this is a probable source. If the lifelines are loose they should be able to be tightened at the ends unless all the extra thread has been taken up. If this is the case it's probably because people have used your lifelines to push and pull on when "helping" you dock. It's proper practice not to use the lifelines or stanchions to push and pull on - instead, try to get people to use the toe rail. When adding new screw locations for added stanchions try to provide some good bedding on the backside of the deck for fastener penetration. Probably use epoxy to seal the holes before putting the screws in, but not so much so that the screws will crack the inside of the deck.
