These questions are intended for Gordon Torreson through the diesel forum. Hi, my name is Ron Hughes and I own a Hunter 40.5 sailboat with a 4JH2E as its auxiliary engine with 650 hours on it. I have a few questions to which I would really appreciate having expert answers . I would be grateful any light you might shed by taking the time to answer them. Perhaps in the process you will generate some new customers! I recently had a diesel repair shop in the town of Uclulet on Vancouver Island in B.C. Canada tell me that I needed 4 injector nozzles at a cost of about $150 each. Is this a reasonable price? Isn't 650 hours WAY early to need 'em? Since I am now the proud owner of 4 of these new injectors, is there any way that Yanmar might help defray my cost if in fact they failed prematurely? Do they care, and if so, who should I contact? What is the brand and order # for the manufacturer's (Yanmar) recommended antifreeze, and what makes it the product that I should use? Is there a special ingredient or process that you might explain? Can I use Mobil 1 effectively, or is it a bad idea to use synthetics? If I can use Mobil 1, which viscosity would you recommend? Are they better or worse than Delo 400 30W which I now use? Is Bio-Diesel OK to use? There is a supplier here who is making bio-diesel from used fryer oil from KFC who claims it is OK, what do you think? Is "Soy Gold" a better choice? If so, why? What blend percentage etc.? I have made these questions short on purpose. If you would like me to provide any further info, just let me know and I will try. Thanks in advance for your expertise and help! Ron Hughes Commodore, The Hunter Sailing Assn. of Oregon

Synthetics

Ron, Synthetic oils were developed for gas turbine (jet aircraft) engines which develop temperatures and rotational speeds which your engine will never see. Outside of aircraft and racing use, the benefits of synthetics do not justify their additional cost. Use any diesel rated oil from a quality manufacturer, and you'll be fine.

injectors

you did not say why you needed new injectors, so this might not help, but injector can go bad because of water in the fuel(crack the tip of the injector) so the hours are not revelent hope this helps but would still like to hear Gordons reply Pete
