I have a Hunter 42 Passage. The previous owner had the life raft stored right in front of the dodger. ( 6 man Viking in a hard case) I don't like it blocking my vision. Where are other Passage owners securing there life rafts?
Life raft location usually works best where you have good access to launch and jump up into the raft. As stepping aboard a raft rarely occurs in calm seas you will want solid places to safely hold on while you and crew work to get into the raft. I would think away from a swinging boom works better than under it. This would lead one to use the bow or the stern. As the bow may be a high point, the stern is convenient and often near the passage way which tends to be the last place folks leave with their ditch bag and what ever emergency equipment they have.
I would opt for a stern departure. Up into the life raft. Places to hold onto and tie the raft to before casting away.
CG says avoid at all costs the notion that you can launch the life raft and then jump in and swim to the raft.
In many of these documented survival stories, crews abandoned their damaged vessels, sometimes facing storm conditions in a raft (as in the 1998 Sydney-Hobart Race) when their boats were later found to be afloat. Remember that your chances of remaining safe and being spotted by rescuers are always better onboard a floating boat than in a life raft.
