We just purchased a 34H and would like to change the life lines since the plastic lining is cracked and rusty. Is there a low cost solution or where is the best place to buy new ones ?

use your life line

Any rigging shop can make new ones, or West Marine has a rigging shop that can do it. Remove and use the old ones to use for a pattern. And that is my final answer :)

Save the hardware

Save the old pelican hooks .... you can probably still use them with the new lines.

JSI in Florida

I had new lifelines made by JSI in Florida this winter (see them at www.sailnet.com). I needed to add gates to make boarding and leaving easier and just marked the positions on the old lifelines and sent them off. Make sure to mark the position of the terminal hardware so that the length of the new lines is correct. New ones fit perfectly and look great!

Response by Tom JSI life lines. How much did it cost to remade the lines?

Cost from JSI

Cost for a 1979 H33 with all new hardware, all new wire and labor was $526.55. That included gate hardware for both port and starboard sides (in fact, the way they set up the gate hardware, there are actually 2 gates - 1 on each side of the designated stanchion). I could have saved some $$ re-using the existing hardware (I think around $50), but I decided to replace it all. I dealt with Jerry Hammel, the Rigging Manager, down there. He was very helpful. Good luck!

REPLACEMENT LIFELINES

Alan, et.al.: I just replaced the cracked lifelines on my H31 and used West Marine rigging service for the job. While I'm sure I used a little less wire than you will, my total cost, including all new hardware (if your boat is over 8 years old, it doesn't make sense to reuse any of your old stuff) was less than $300 (I got 15% off from a sale). Using West Marine did mean I measure the job (which I must have done 10 times!), but it wasn't hard and I'm very happy with West's response, support, and workmanship. I would highly recommend them. Good luck! Tim L. ("TIDE")
