I want to add life lines to my 78' C22 to keep the family safe. Where do I start?

use cordage

I use use cordage unstead of the usual 'rubber' coated steel. There was an article in Practical Sailor that addressed this; I can dig it up and give you more details if you like.

Tell Me More

David: I'd like to hear more about the Practical Sailor advice and your experience with it, e.g. kind, dia, and ln of cordage, where you attach to your C22, type of harness, hardware for attachments, etc. Thanks, Dick

Stanchions

Do you already have stanchions but just no lifelines? I agree with David in using 3 strand line for the lifelines. I did this on my now former (*sniff*) C27 and it worked GREAT! I bought nice "classic" bronze pelican hooks that had an eye at the end and spliced one end of the line to it then attached it to the "gate" (pushpit). I then led the line thru the holes in the stanchions to the connecting point on the pulpit and stretched it as tight as my little girly arms could get it. I marked the "middle" of that splice's eye, meaning the point at which the line bends thru the bail & comes out the other side. This way I knew exactly where to splice. I unhooked the pelican hook and then spliced the "permenent" end onto the pulpit, making sure that mark was right in the middle. When I was done, I had a nice, tight lifeline. It took no more than a couple hours for both, assuming you know how to splice. BTW, if they get a little saggy over time, all you have to do is unhook them, wet them down and let them dry. They'll tighten right back up again! LaDonna

More basic instructions please

I need it explained to me like I'm a 4 year old, the info in the responses are too advanced for me. I have no hardware to begin with, how many "poles" do I need, length of cable, bolts, washers, where to drill, stuff like that. Thanks Gary

Campy

Had sailed on a C-22 with lifelines in the past. I didn't like how they were at my knees and also how they took up a large portion of the walk way on the way forward. I got the feeling they would just give me something to hit on my way overboard and not stop me much on my way over. On my boat also a C-22, I've elected not to install lifelines and opted for jack lines instead. I run a web strap, port and starboard, from the forward hand hold on the coach roof to the "D" ring in my life vest or harness. The strap is long enough for my crew (girls 12 and 14) to clip on in the cockpit and scurry forward to bring down the jib or help with docking. I've also rigged a downhaul on my jib/genny to cut down the "up forward" time in poor weather. Life lines in this boat seemed to be a safety hazard in themselves when I evaluated it. If your still interested, Catalina Direct will sell you lifelines and all the fixings, and give you advice as well. Good luck! Campy
