My husband and I just bought a 1982 model. It is not equipped with lifelines. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to purchase them, how much they cost and if we can install them ourselves ? Any help is greatly appreciated !

Stanchions

Does the boat have stanchions installed & just no lines running through them or just nothing whatsoever? If it has stanchions, you can go to a rigging shop and have them make them for you. This can be kind of expensive but they'd be solid and done well. If you're just planning on daysailing in protected waters, another option would be to do what I did. I took 3 strand line, spliced one end to the attachment at the bow pulpit (this was on a 27 so your setup is probably a little different), spliced on a bronze pelican hook & voila! New "salty" lifelines. They're surprisingly stout, though I would want to trust my life to one in a seaway. LaDonna

you may not want them

i find on the 22 that the life lines make it harder to go forward as well as interfere with headsail sheeting angle. and they are to low to do any good . (as well as not substantial enough) ive never tried to grab one while working the foredeck . if you dont have them i wouldnt be in a hurry to put them on. i believe that they are false security and tend to preempt basic safety ( thats why most offshore boats have jack lines). if you are nervous going forward put the life vest on . i use the manual sos suspender. i would have got the auto but i dingy sail alot and am wet a good amount of the time. its a better place to spend your money . get the one with the harness built right in . good luck

Valid point, mg

There is very little walking room on that boat as it is & lifelines do tend to get in the way. And the point you have about a false sense of security is one I've heard before. It might be better to hook up jacklines & tether yourself to it anytime you go forward. Cheaper too! Just a thought, anyway. LaDonna

Use Grab Rails

The life lines are useless unless you have small children on board. They are too low to give any protection except to pivot you over the side if you loose your balance. Install grab rails along the cabin top. You can order them from Catalina Direct.

Don't need them

Lynn: I've have my 1973 C22 for nine years and it's never had lifelines and I have never had any problems with any one falling overboard. Infact I raced on a C22 that had lifelines and the seemed to get in the way of both moving around the deck and close hauled sail trim. The only time I think they would be an advantage is if you routinely sail with small children aboard. in that case you can attach safety netting to the lifelines to keep the children on board. You can fall over them....

there're not high enough. I recently rafted up with some very experienced Cat 22'ers and a Rhodes 22'er and none of them were advocates of the lifelines. I have lifelines
