To All, This page is not geting enough play. Possibly because Hunter does not support racing. In the recent issue of Sailing, Larsen Marine of Waukegan, Ill has a used Hunter 35 for sail that is "Libery Cup equipped." Does anyone now what the Liberty Cup is and what type of equippment was or is required for this event.?? Bob Dean Hunter Legend 35 racer Pensacola, FL

Liberty Cup equiped

Hunter built about five or six Matched 35.5s for the Liberty Cup races back in about early 90s. These boats were raced by the BIG NAMES in Sailboat racing. Hunter made promo tapes of the races and were very impressive. I think the races were either in Florida or the Cribs. We have atleast two of these Cup boats out here in Seattle and maybe three. They're great boats to cruise and RACE. One of the boat's name is RASCAL. Craig

Liberty Racing

Craig, Could you put me in touch with some of these people. I am mainly interested in the tuning aspects of the boat. I race the HL 35 with a PHRF of 144. I don't think I'll ever see the day that this boat will race to that number. What is bother some is that some one some where made the determination that this hull rated 144, and in some PHRF ruling areas even lower. Do you think that Hunter would share the Liberty Cup program info ?? My email is perdido@perdido.com. I would appreciate it if you could ask the Liberty Cup racers that you know if they would share their racing knowledge with me. Thanks again for the info on the LC. Bob Dean

Those 35's were set up completly different than the stock 35. If I remember right they had 2 different. sheet tracks for the head sail. Back stay runners, Fin Keels and etc. I think the boat has a very good rating at 144. We use too have a pair of them in Holland and I had to race them with my 31 @ 162. I used to beat them going to wind. Than they both bought new sails and made some other adjustments, which made them preform very well.

Racing Hunters

My guess on why the racing doesn't get much play is that most people don't buy Hunters to race. Their market is more the local cruisers, and they fit that well with price and features. I bought mine for that, but do the racing because it is required as member of my club. What I didn't realize is how much I would enjoy the racing. From what I have seen on this site is that like me, most of the Hunter owners that try racing after buying the boat, but did not buy the boat for racing. Hunter didn't build the boat for that, so they don't have "experts" on their staff to support it. There are a few of us out there that do race, and try to keep with it long enough to be competitive. Since there aren't as many racers that own Hunters, we compete against other boats. While I may never beat a J boat, I will learn to get the most out of my Hunter. I also know that it won't happen in my first few years, but I keep trying to improve. While all of this is said, I would like to see more activity on the site concerning racing. I guess it will just take a few people with like interests to make that happen. I won't blame that on Hunter though... Steve

More Racing Help Needed

I too own a Hunter (310, my third Hunter), more for cruising than racing. However, after purchasing my first boat 7 years ago, I got hooked on racing. Unfortunately, to cruise with family the J boat or other "race" boat isn't a real option. I would love to see Hunter address this issue though, by either (1) offering advice and gear upgrades to make your boat faster, or (2) coming out with a boat that is still cruise oriented but has go-fast ability (performance package upgrade). I looked at the new Beneateau 36.7 in Annapolis and liked the looks that it would go faster than my Hunter, but the cockpit is still a race-oriented design. The bottom line is that the Hunter is a great boat to sail, but we all like to have performance. I'm surpised Hunter doesn't offer advice, training, videos, anything to help improve performance, since they have so many people sailing the same designs.
