ive run out of money. i launch wednesday, cruise to my slip on saturday. i thought i was going to have exactly enough for everything. Im short $400 and exhausted all other options. i need some kind of insurance just to get in the marina. and im worried about liability if something happens. sure im worried about my boat too, but more worried about others and fuel spills.

does anyone know of liability only insurance? i cant seem to find anything. my neighbor in the boatyard says he has liability only, but cant remember the company and says all he remembers is "jackline" or something. he has a nice yacht. maybe it has something to do with him sailing to chile.

i just need something cheap, quick, now, so i can pull into my slip. in two weeks i will pay the boatus premium and cancel the cheapie. im not want to wait for launch, b/c i will be charged another months fee. and im absolutely done with the yard. been in there almost 2 years now!

40' 1986 hunter.

thanks,

b

why not buy the boatus liability only and add the rest when you get the money?

try progressive. They were cheaper than everyone else, and you could get liability only

Most companies bill you after you place an order. Are they demanding money up front?
You may want to consider dropping a hook for a couple weeks. If you go up the ashley river side of Charleston, there is an anchorage in front of the bridge, right in front of the town marina and near the entrance to the ICW heading south. You should be able to sit there for free for a couple weeks.

Also, most insurance companies let you pay in payments... and don't require the full payment in one go.

Don't bother calling Progressive. Though they insure 30 footers, they don't insure 40 footers.

You might want to try Seahorse Underwriters. We were with our home insurance company for our Mac26s but when we tried to get the Hunter 260 insured it was listed as 26' 3 and above the 26 ft maximum.

My agent went out and found Seahorse underwriters. (that is why I been with him for 15 plus years) They insured the Hunter for $250 per year with the coverage that met our Marinas guidelines and covers Coastal and Mexico waters. Granted our boat is rated in an AZ inland lake so I am sure that has a lot to do with the rates.

When they sent the bill it included a payment plan option where you can make 4 payments over a 6 month period for a 1 year policy. They wrote the policy over the phone and faxed the binder to the marina all within 2 hours, no downpayment and then billed me about a week later. The payment option along with the week billing might give you the time you need. You can google Seahorse Underwriters to find their page.

My agent stated he did the due dilligence on the company and they are A+ rated other than that I know nothing about them good or bad so this is not an endorsement for Sehorse Undewriters.

If you have homeowners, or condo insurance, Co`s dont advertise or seek this kind of business but sometimes the co will issue a policy for their customers. I have my homeowners, umbrella, and boat insured as a package with one company. Decent rates too

We have Seahorse for our C30. Pay by the quarter. Policy is underwritten by Travelers/St. Paul.

We use the same company as our house and auto and all other insurance... State Farm. We have had coverage on the boat since the day we signed the papers, a month ago, and just today got the bill. I guess that won't work if you haven't been with the same company for a long time.

I realize it don't help you now and I don't mean anything by saying this, but if money is that tight what are you doing with a 40 foot boat ? I would be so worried about the $$ all the time I wouldn't be able to enjoy the boat.
Good luck, hope it all works out for you.

Heh, heh, heh..... that's exactly what I was thinking.... for gosh sake man.. just order the boat us liability insurance and have them send a copy of your new policy to the marina... They'll bill you in few weeks, and you can delay payment a few weeks more or at least make installments. You can add the comprehensive anytime after that.

If you live aboard, you may get a discount since you will have higher security against break-ins.

I have my boat insured with a major company as a rider to my homeowner's policy. Also umbrella insurance would kick in. We also have our cars insured with the same company. So for liability I should have peace of mind, right?

But recently I decided to ask my insurer: What if some accident happened that also caused some my tank's diesel to spill into the bay. And I get a hefty fine.

This company insures lots of boats, but they sure waffled on this one. Even after the rep got in contact with the proper department. They would cover (after deductable) for cleanup and any damage caused. But considering the quantity is small, and diesel and will disipate, probably no cleanup effort can be made and its unlikely damage to property is done. As to a potential fine from the authorities .... they had no clear answer. My impression is that they would view a fine the same way as a traffic citation. If you caused an accident (say by missing a stop sign), they would cover you for damages/liability. But they wouldn't reimburse you for the stop sign citation from the police.

I am going to enquire further for a more definitive answer.

Im going with Progressive through seahorse. he told me he couldnt help me through seahorse, but could through progressive. I told him progressive wouldnt insure 40'ers but he said they would for him. Progressive is almost double boatus for liability only, and about $100 more per year for full coverage. the only reason im gonna go with them is they dont require a survey and will bind coverage instantly over the phone. my surveryor is stiffing me, and says he has an emergency and wont be able to contact me for a few days. so i dont have my survey on time. and boatus requires a survey and 48 hours to bind coverage. i leave the boatyard saturday, so no time left. I guess i will cancel progressive and go with boatus in a couple weeks.

later!
